In 2001 trials, seven kenaf varieties were evaluated and all performed well under Western Illinois conditions.  The plots were established by germinating seedlings in the greenhouse and transplanting them to the field in mid May.  Between row spacing was 30 inches while within row spacing was 12 inches in the 100 ft2 plots.  The varieties grew quickly and reached an average height of 12 feet.   Stalk diameters reached 3 inches on some varieties.  Due to the vigorous growth, only early weed control was necessary.
