Alumni Achievement Award Recipients Announced

Three Western Illinois University alumni have been selected to receive the WIU Alumni Achievement Award at the Saturday, Dec. 17 Commencement Exercises.

This year's Alumni Achievement recipients are Regina Young Hyatt, dean of students and associate vice president for student affairs at the University of Alabama, Huntsville; Mark Konkol, a writer with the Chicago Sun-Times and recent Pulitzer Prize winner; and Jim Krasula of CBS Radio.

Western's Alumni Achievement Award is given in recognition of outstanding contributions in one or more of the following: exceptional accomplishment in one’s chosen field of endeavor; exceptional service in community affairs at the local, state or national levels; or exceptional service in support of the advancement and continued excellence of WIU.

WIU Housing Master Plan Update

Housing UpdateAuthor Ann Douglas is quoted as saying "Home is an invention on which no one has yet improved." But for Western Illinois University Housing and Dining Services (UHDS), there's always room for improvement when it comes to college students' homes away from home.


Roughly one-third of Western's nearly 12,500 student body lives on campus, and to make residence hall life as comfortable -- and convenient -- as possible, UHDS created a master plan in October 2008. The plan's purpose is to address aging residence hall facilities and declining residence hall occupancy, as well as to ensure the future success of WIU's housing and dining program.

WIU Marketing continues its efforts to promote Western Illinois University and get everyone in the state to "Think Purple!" If you're in the Woodfield Mall this month, be sure to look for the WIU kiosks featuring WIU alumnus and Pulitzer Prize winner Mark Konkol and WIU student and Rhodes Scholar finalist (WIU's first-ever!) Jenna Verity. Jenna was also featured in a Chicago Daily Herald ad on Nov. 24, and Mark has been featured in ads in the Sun-Times and its sister papers.
