In the Spring semester CITR hosts the Annual WIU Symposium on Teaching, Research and Creative Activities. This event attempts to highlight the innovations in teaching, research and creative activities from across campus and disseminate/share the same across disciplines. Additionally, faculty present peer reviewed submissions to the university community at large. The event is capped by a keynote address.
This years theme: Science and Technology: Discover, Innovate and Create.

Topic: iPad applications that benefit reading specialists
Description: I will have a continuous running slide show that highlights results of a 2 semester study of graduate students use of iPad applications to work with struggling middle school readers and their perceptions about using this technology when teaching struggling readers.

Topic: Using short video podcasts to inspire students.
Description: I wanted to supplement my courses with short, video features that emphasized core course materials and could be used further as outreach. In this short presentation, I will discuss the major steps to making successful, short podcasts for students.

Topic: FSI and Online Teaching: Things I Learned
Description: This table will discuss the use of Wikis and Google Docs for teaching as well as other tools/ideas learned at FSI. These revolve around adopting best practices for online teaching, OpenSim, Social Networks, Simple PowerPoint Tricks and other online tools.

Topic: "Examples of Using Prezi Software in Student Presentations"
Description: I required my students to use Prezi software for their capstone projects in my "Current Issues in the Music Industry" Class. They came up with some creative presentations I feel would serve as examples for other disciplines and demonstrate how software can spark individual research interest among students.

Topic: The Google Online Marketing Challenge: A Hands-On Hospitality Teaching and Learning Initiative
Description: Hospitality students are currently participating in the Google Online Marketing Challenge. This program is a global online marketing competition open to professors and their students in any higher education institution. With a US $250 provided by Google, student teams develop and run an online advertising strategy for a real business using Google AdWords & Google+. In this process, they sharpen their advertising, consulting and data analysis skills.

Topic: Electronic Response Systems: Using "clickers" to take attendance and check for understanding in large lecture classes.
Description: I will demonstrate how I use clickers every class session to quiz students on course material, simultaneously take attendance, and immediately post the results on WesternOnline. I will also discuss frequently encountered problems such as expense, registration and dishonesty.
