How Not to Use the Wireless Network

  • Microwaves
  • 2.4 Ghz Wireless Phones
  • 2.4 Ghz Lights
  • Non Authorized 802.11b Access Points
  • Dead Spots
  • Excessive Bandwidth Usage

Wireless technology has many benefits, but there are certain distinct ways not to use a wireless network.

  1. Microwaves: Microwaves, especially older ones, may interfere with the wireless signal. The interference range is approximately one foot from the microwave oven.
  2. 2.4 Ghz Wireless Phones: The 2.4 Ghz range is the same range as the wireless network. If a 2.4 Ghz wireless phone is used with in two feet or less of a wireless computer, the computer may lose its connection.
  3. 2.4 Ghz Lights: Some lights run at the 2.4 Ghz range, this can cause distortion in the wireless network. This works just like the wireless phone in generating interference.
  4. Non Authorized 802.11b Access Points: Any access points that are not part of the Horrabin Hall Wireless Network (DAWN) are prohibited by campus policy, this includes Apple Airport Hubs. Due to the nature of wireless technology there are very few usable channels for the radio waves. A "rogue" wireless access point will create a huge cell of interference on the campus wireless network. This interference will affect everyone within a huge area, causing the wireless network to be unavailable in that area.
  5. Dead Spots: Due to the chaotic nature of radio waves, there is always the possibility of having "Dead Sports" in the building. These are rare evens where the building's wireless ceases to exist in a very small area. The dead spots are usually only a few feet in diameter. There is nothing that can be done about these spots; they usually clear themselves up over time.
  6. Bandwidth: Excessive bandwidth can slow down the entire wireless network. Everyone shares bandwidth on a wireless network and when one person is using it all then there is no bandwidth available for anyone else. The bandwidth available will be tightly regulated to every individual to ensure the most efficient use of the wireless network.
