          A.    Request for Change in Credit Hours

          B.     Request for Change in Course Description and Prerequisite

 

                  1.     MATH 183, Computer Algebra System Lab, 1 s.h.

                          Current:        An introduction to computer algebra systems in the study of algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus, focusing on multiple forms of representation, exploring conjectures, problem solving, and communicating results.  (Except by special permission, students must co-register in  Math 133.  Proficiency credit is available for students with experience using a computer algebra system.)

                                                Prereq: MATH 129 or MATH 131 or equivalent (C grade or better), and co-registration in MATH 133 or by special permission.

 

                          Proposed:     An introduction to computer algebra systems in the study of calculus, focusing on exploring conjectures, solving problems, and communicating the results.  An opportunity for undergraduate research for the interested student.  (Except by special permission, students must co-register in  Math 231 and have some computer programming experience.  Proficiency credit is available for students with experience using a computer algebra system.)

                                                Prereq: CS 211 and CS 212 (C grade or better) or CS 223 (C grade or better), and co-registration in MATH 231, or by permission of the department chair.

                           Mendelian laws, genetic interaction, linkage and mapping, recombination, chromosomal aberrations, gene structure and function, extranuclear inheritance, population genetics.

                           Prereq: BIOL 102, 103, 330; ENG 280

 

     Proposed:     Genetics and Evolutionary Biology, 4 s.h.

                           Lecture and lab will emphasize transmission genetics, genetic mapping, and the genetic processes underlying evolutionary processes.

                                                A series of modules covering various biological techniques.

                                                Prereq: Senior standing in biology education or permission of instructor

 

                          Proposed:     Scientific Techniques and Issues

                                                A series of modules covering various scientific techniques, safety, ethics, and technology as well as connections between science education and the community.

                                                Prereq: Senior standing in biology, chemistry, or physics in the Teacher Certification option or accepted into the MAT program for secondary science certification or permission of the instructor, and ENG 280 or equivalent

 

                  2.     MATH 408, Computers in Elementary/Middle School Mathematics, 3 s.h.

                          Current:        Computers in Elementary/Middle School Mathematics

                                                The study of special topics in mathematics utilizing microcomputers through an introduction to Logo and the effective use of selected software.

                                                Prereq: MATH 206 and some computer experience, or consent of instructor

 

                          Proposed:     Mathematical Topics and Technology for Middle School

                                                An investigation into concepts and connections in Algebra, Geometry, Measurement, Number Sense, Data Analysis and Probability using technology such as calculators, computer applications, programming, and Internet resources to enhance the understanding of mathematical topics through technology.

                                                Prereq: MATH 123 or MATH 128, or equivalent; or STAT 171
