                                                Emphasis on professional values and ethics, history, policies, and services, and methods of dealing with diverse populations and issues.

         

                          Proposed:     SW 100

                                                An introduction to the profession of social work, to social welfare, and to the methods and fields of social work practice, emphasizing generalist social work.  A grade of C or better is required to continue through the curriculum.

                          Current:        Preparation for the practicum including: resume writing, investigation of agency opportunities, interviewing, overview of safety and harassment issues.

                                                Prerequisite: SW 315 and social work major

 

                          Proposed:     Prepares majors for the practicum.  Content includes resume preparation; investigation of agency placement opportunities; interviews for placement; overview of ethical, safety, and liability issues; and the role of participants as adult learners.  A grade of C or better is required to continue through the curriculum.

                                                Prerequisites: Restricted to social work majors.  SW 315 with a grade of C or better and permission of the Director of Field Education.

                                                Values, knowledge, theories, and skills of social work as a basis for understanding individuals and systems such as family and community with diverse populations.

                                                Prerequisites: SW 211 with a grade of C or better, SW 221 (or concurrent), and junior standing, or consent of instructor

 

                          Proposed:     Generalist Social Work Practice I, 4 s.h.

                                                Provides foundation in the knowledge, values, and skills needed in the generalist method of social work, focusing on working with individuals.  A concurrent lab provides skill development.  A grade of C or better is required to continue through the curriculum.

                                                Prerequisites: Restricted to social work majors.  Permission of advisor and consent of instructor

                                                Life span development for social workers.  Theories and knowledge of bio-psycho-social development and cultural systems as they affect human behavior.  Related values and ethical issues.

                                                Prerequisites: BIOL 100, or equivalent, PSY 100, SW 211 with a grade of C or better

         

                          Proposed:     SW 212

                                                An exploration of human development theories in the context of biological, physical, psychological, social, and cultural environments that help shape behavior.  The focus is on conception through adolescence.  A grade of C or better is required to continue through the curriculum.

                                                Prerequisites: SW 100 with a grade of C or better; BIOL 100; or consent of instructor

 

                  2.     SW 314, Human Behavior and the Social Environment II, 3 s.h.

                                                Application of broad perspectives of social work practice.  Assessment of human behavior identifying biological and sociological variables influencing development with special emphasis on human diversity.

                                                Prerequisites: SW 310 and social work major

         

                          Proposed:     SW 213

                                                An exploration of human development theories in the context of biological, physical, psychological, social, and cultural environments that help shape behavior.  The focus is on young adulthood through late adulthood.  A grade of C or better is required to continue through the curriculum.

                                                Prerequisites: SW 212 with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor

                                                A comparison of traditional and contemporary social welfare policies.  Specific social welfare programs are analyzed for their philosophical foundations, client populations, and group implications.

                                                Prerequisites: SW 211 with a grade of C or better

                                                An introduction to past and present local, state, and national social welfare policies.  Policies are analyzed for their philosophical foundations, populations served, and social and political implications.  A grade of C or better is required to continue through the curriculum.

                  2.     SW 321, Social Work Research for Human Services, 3 s.h.

                          Current:        SW 321, Social Work Research for Human Services

                                                Qualitative and quantitative research design, data gathering, testing.  This course includes a major research project with application to practice and program evaluation.  Writing Instruction in the Disciplines (WID) course.

                                                Prerequisites: SW 221, ENG 280, and social work major

         

                          Proposed:     SW 313, Social Work Research Statistics

                                                An introduction to statistical analysis and its application in quantitative and qualitative research in social work.  This course continues and completes the research project begun in SW 312.  Social work values and ethics and issues of diversity are given special attention.  Writing Instruction in the Disciplines (WID) course.  A grade of C or better is required to continue through the curriculum.

                                                Prerequisite: SW 312 with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor

                                                Treatment skills and techniques applied to individuals, families, diverse groups, and communities.  Attention to problem solving, assessment, interventions, and terminations in the change process.

                                                Prerequisites: SW 311, 315, 321 (or concurrent)

 

                          Proposed:     SW 415, Generalist Social Work Practice II

                                                Covers the theory and skills of the generalist method of social work.  Its focus is on families and small groups.  A grade of C or better is required to continue through the curriculum.

                                                Prerequisites: Restricted to social work majors.  SW 315 with a grade of C or better and consent of instructor.

                                                Intervention skills and techniques applied to different sized systems, sensitive to cultural difference with emphasis on organizations and communities.

                                                Prerequisites: SW 221, 311, and 315

 

                          Proposed:     SW 425, Generalist Social Work Practice III

                                                Covers the theory and skills of the generalist method of social work.  Its focus is on organizations, communities, societies, and international issues.  A grade of C or better is required to continue through the curriculum.

                                                An introduction to qualitative and quantitative research concepts used in social work practice and program evaluation

                                                Prerequisites: SW 221, pre-social or social work major, and completion of the University General Education Curriculum baccalaureate-level skills in mathematics requirement.

         

                          Proposed:     SW 312, Social Work Research Methodology

                                                An introduction to the research methods used in conducting quantitative and qualitative research.  Social work values and ethics and issues of diversity are given special attention.  A grade of C or better is required to continue through the curriculum.

                                                Prerequisites: SW 100 with a grade of C or better; completion of math competency, or consent of instructor

 

                  2.     SW 420, Services to Children and Their Families, 3 s.h.

                          Current:        SW 420, Services to Children and Their Families

                                                Theories, policies, and practices of services to children and their families.  Current trends in protective services, family preservation services, adoption, and substitute care are studied.

                                                Prerequisite: SW 315 or consent of instructor

 

                          Proposed:     SW 330, Child and Family Services

                                                An introduction to theories, policies, and practices in child welfare.  Current trends in protective services, family preservation, adoption, and substitute care are studied.

                                                Prerequisite: Junior standing or consent of instructor

                         

                  3.     SW 442, National Social Work Policy and Services, 3 s.h.

                          Current:        SW 442, National Social Work Policy and Services

                                                Formulation and implementation of social policy at the federal level as it impacts the community.  Examines policy models, program implementation, and budgetary constraints. 

                                                Prerequisite: SW 311

 

                          Proposed:     SW 325, National Social Welfare Policy

                                                Study and analysis of the formulation and implementation of social welfare policy at the federal level and its impact on all system levels.  Policy models, implementation strategies, and budgetary constraints are examined.  A grade of C or better is required to continue through the curriculum.

                                                Prerequisites: SW 320 with a grade or better; or consent of instructor

                  1.     SW 444, Social Work Practicum and Seminar, 12-15 s.h.

                                                Social work knowledge and skills applied in an agency setting.  Includes seminar class on the social work profession.

                                                Prerequisites: majors; 15 s.h. of social work courses including SW 442, SW 443, and a 2.50 GPA in the major

 

                          Proposed:     SW 480, Generalist Social Work Practicum, 13 s.h.

                                                An educational experience in an agency setting that offers practical application of social work knowledge, values, and skills.  A concurrent integrative seminar provides opportunities for discussion and direction from the instructor.  A grade of C or better is required to graduate.

                                                Prerequisite: Restricted to social work majors.  SW 415, SW 425, SW 440 with a grade of C or better; a 2.50 GPA in the major; completion of all other required social work courses with a grade of C or better; being within 20 credits of completion of degree; and permission of the Director of Field Education and Chairperson.
