A.    Requests for Changes in Prefixes

        1.      UNIV 201, Introduction to Environmental Studies, 3 s.h.

                        Proposed:       ENV 201

Motion: To approve UNIV 201 (La Prad/Neumann)

Vicki Nicholson of the Provost’s office explained that whereas normally requests to change prefixes do not come before CCPI since they are considered to be minor changes, she suggested that CCPI consider the requests from Environmental Studies because they are asking for a narrowing of an existing course.  Currently, any department can offer UNIV 201, but the change, if approved, would mean that it could only be offered by the College of Arts and Sciences.  Bill Doe, Director of the Institute for Environmental Studies, explained that students have a difficult time finding UNIV 201 and 401 in the catalog, and that with the establishment of the Institute, the College is trying to increase interest in the Environmental Studies minor by making these courses easier to locate.

C.    Applicability of Multiple Titles to 450 Workshop Courses

At the request of Health Sciences, CCPI discussed the new multiple titles process for special topics courses and whether this process should be extended to 450 workshops.  Currently, 450 requests must be approved every time a new title is assigned and, once approved, each workshop title may appear in the University catalog with its description.  Other multiple titles special topics courses do not appear separately in the University catalog, although they do appear with individual titles on student transcripts.  CCPI members noted that the intent of the multiple titles process was for these titles to be offered only once or twice, whereas 450 workshops have historically been more permanent.  It was noted that if 450 workshops were to receive multiple title designation, they would no longer have to go through CCPI for approval when each new topic was offered.  Health Sciences currently lists nine 450 workshops in the University catalog.  The question was raised whether Health Sciences would pull these nine from the catalog and make them multiple titles of one generic 450 workshop listing.  It was suggested that perhaps Health Sciences should consider submitting a new course request for a topics course, such as Consumer Health, to which multiple titles could then be assigned; it was pointed out, though, that then the course description could not be listed in the undergraduate catalog as is currently allowed for their 450 workshop courses.

Motion: To table further discussion until a representative of Health Sciences can be present (La Prad/Neumann)

MOTION APPROVED  8 YES – 0 NO – 0 AB

A.     Provost’s Report

Associate Provost Baily related discussions at Faculty Senate regarding the American Humanics minor approved by CCPI at its last meeting.  Concerns were expressed at Senate about the requirement of RPTA 475 within the minor, and Dr. Baily expressed her concerns that the minor went forward to Senate containing experimental courses.  During discussions at Faculty Senate, it was revealed that RPTA 475 is comprised of a field trip to an American Humanics conference, which this year was held in San Diego, and which is always held prior to the start of spring semester.  CCPI noted that the original RPTA 475 request form did not specify where or when the conference would be held.  The Faculty Senate Executive Committee is considering whether the course violates the Policy on Field Trips, which specifies that field trips cannot occur outside of the semester.  Chairperson Anderson will inform the Senate chair that the minor was discussed further at CCPI and that the Council is willing to reconsider it if asked to do so by the Executive Committee or Senate.

       Motion:  To adjourn (Neumann)

The Council adjourned at 4:20 p.m.

Ed Woell, Secretary
