I.     Consideration of Minutes – 6 October 2005

       APPROVED AS DISTRIBUTED

II.    Announcements

Chairperson Anderson announced that JOUR 428, which had been re-approved by CCPI at its last meeting, was approved by Faculty Senate on October 18 with no discussion.  In addition, the IBHE has approved the new Forensic Chemistry major.

III.   Old Business

A.     Report from Senate Executive Committee on Proposed Concentrations and Pre-Baccalaureate Certificate Program

Chairperson Anderson announced that the Senate’s Executive Committee has asked the CCPI subcommittee to explore the differences between majors, minors, comprehensive majors, emphases, options, and other curricular designations.  The subcommittee is asked to provide information regarding which designations appear on transcripts, the minimum and maximum hours of each, and to consider where the proposed pre-baccalaureate certificate and considerations might fit into the whole.  The subcommittee will meet at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 27 to begin this process.  Members include Pat Anderson, James La Prad, Kathy Neumann, and Nancy Parsons (CCPI), Jim Schmidt and David Rohall (COAS), John Drea (COBT), Jill Myers (COEHS), Marcus Olson (COFAC), and Barb Baily, Vicki Nicholson, and Donna Williams, who will serve as “resource persons” for the subcommittee.

IV.  New Business

       A.   Requests for 275/475 Courses

1.          ANTH 475, Environmental Anthropology, 3 s.h.

NO OBJECTIONS

2.          SOC 475, Military Sociology, 3 s.h.

Since it is a 400-level course, CCPI suggested that a prerequisite be added.  Sociology professor David Rohall told CCPI that the course tends to draw students from diverse backgrounds but agreed to add SOC 100 as a prereq.  In response to a question, Dr. Rohall stated he has been in discussion with the head of Military Science and they do not deal with the same issues as SOC 475, but CCPI indicated they would like to see a letter of support from that department.

DR. NEUMANN OBJECTED TO THE COURSE

Sociology was asked to bring the request back to the November 3 meeting with a letter of support from Military Science and with the addition of a prerequisite.

       B.   Request for New Course

               1.   WS 420, Race, Class, and Gender, 3 s.h.

Motion: To approve WS 420 (Parsons/Melkumian)

                     Changes:

·         For Department, list Women’s Studies only

·         Remove reference to grad standing in Prerequisites section

       MOTION APPROVED  10 YES – 0 NO – 0 AB

C.     Request for Cross-Listing

1.        WS/AAS/SOC 420, Race, Class, and Gender, 3 s.h.

           Motion: To approve WS/AAS/SOC 420 (La Prad/George)

Change: Remove reference to grad standing in Prerequisites section

In response to a question as to whether the course will be taught alternately by faculty from the three departments, Women’s Studies Chair Polly Radosh told CCPI it is anticipated that there will be significant enrollment in this proposed course, so the departments will offer it simultaneously.

MOTION APPROVED  10 YES – 0 NO – 0 AB  PENDING SENATE APPROVAL OF WS 420

D.     Request for Change in Course Title

1.        HORT 393, Ornamental Crop Production, 3 s.h.

           Current:          Ornamental Crop Production

           Proposed:       Greenhouse and Nursery Management

Motion: To approve HORT 393 (Parsons/Neumann)

                        Changes:

·         Change Abbreviated Course Title to GH & NUR MGT

·         Change Effective Date to Spring 2006

The Rationale states that “HORT 486, Nursery Management, has been deleted and the course material covered in HORT 486 will be included in HORT 493.  However, the course description for HORT 393 will remain the same.”  In response to a question as to how this will be accomplished, Agriculture professor Win Phippen explained that the course description is very brief, and that while ornamental crop production will still be discussed, it will not be examined in as much detail.  Previously, three courses were offered by Agriculture: Nursery Management, Ornamental Crop Production, and a general course that covered both.  Dr. Phippen explained that, since there was a lot of overlap, the department proposes now to just retain the general course that covers both topics but wishes to change the title.

Prereq: MATH 129 or consent of instructor

Motion: To approve GEOG 301 (La Prad/Melkumian)

Geography Chair Chris Sutton explained that the intention of the department is to expand the first 12 weeks of the course into 15 weeks and offer the material normally taught at the end of GEOG 301 as a new course, which has not yet been developed.  He added that the change in division level should encourage students who put off taking a 300-level course until their junior or senior year to take this course earlier in their sequence, which will better place them for advanced Geography classes.  In response to a question, Dr. Sutton stated that 15 to 20 percent of GEOG 301 would be removed and used in the new course.  CCPI requested that the current objectives of GEOG 301 and the proposed objectives for GEOG 204 be provided to them.  They also asked that the Effective Date be changed to Spring 2006.

Motion: To table GEOG 301 (Parsons/Woell)

            MOTION TO TABLE APPROVED  10 YES – 0 NO – 0 AB

1.        GEOG 327, Climatology, 3 s.h.

Three facets of climatology are investigated: climate elements and atmospheric processes; climatic classifications and distributions; and the influence of climate on human activity

           Proposed:       Environmental Climatology

This course deals with the mechanisms of heat flow, radiation exchanges and water vapor flux and with the effects of climate on organisms, ecosystems, and human societies as well as change in global environment.

Motion: To approve GEOG 327 (La Prad/Melkumian)

One CCPI member remarked that the statement in the Rationale that the changes were prompted since “the faculty member who teaches this course modified the course content” speaks to a broader issue: that it needs to be made clear that when an instructor changes course content, the process of pre-approving these changes through CCPI is being bypassed.  But another CCPI member noted that sometimes the changes in course content are made very gradually, in “baby steps,” until it is noticed that the course no longer matches its advertised title or description.

           Changes:

·         Change Prerequisite to “Senior standing and consent of instructor”

·         Change Abbreviated Title to ENVIRON CLMTLGY

·         Change Effective Date to Spring 2006

·         In the first sentence of the Rationale for Change – “Since the faculty member who teaches this class modified the course content, the current title ‘Climatology’ no longer accurately describes the course content” – remove the first part of the sentence up to the comma.

MOTION APPROVED  10 YES – 0 NO – 0 AB
