II. Announcements – Chairperson Parsons
thanked Dr. Woell for chairing the previous CCPI meeting.
III. Old Business
A. Request for Change in Credit Hours
1. MICR 200, Introductory Microbiology, 3
s.h.
Current: 3
s.h.
Proposed: 4 s.h.
Biological Sciences Chair Rick Anderson
explained that the increase is necessary in order to encompass the breadth of
the microbiology topics needed to be covered in the three organismal sequence
courses developed as a result of the department’s five-year assessment (MICR
200, BOT 200, ZOOL 200).
MICR 200 was tabled at the previous two
CCPI meetings pending notification of departments affected by the additional
semester hour: Kinesiology, DFMH, Health Sciences, and Chemistry. Health Sciences had objected to the proposed
change, stating in an email to Dr. Anderson that the additional semester hour
would result in a change for the Community Health major from non-comprehensive
to comprehensive. Dr. Anderson had
responded via email that those students could select AGRI 372, Applied
Microbiology, instead of MICR 200. Chairperson
Parsons asked if Health Sciences students taking AGRI 372 could count it as an
equivalent course for MICR 200 in the Microbiology minor as they are both
microbiology classes with similar focuses; Dr. Anderson responded that this would
not be acceptable. Chairperson Parsons
noted that students who major in Community Health with an Environmental Health emphasis
and a minor in Microbiology would have a comprehensive major because of this since
MICR 200 is a required class for the minor.
When asked by Dr. Anderson why a comprehensive major would be needed to
accommodate a subset of students who must take an extra hour, Dr. Parsons
responded that it would be ridiculous for them to have to take both AGRI 372
and MICR 200.
MICR
200 APPROVED 6 YES – 1 NO – 1 AB
Biological Sciences will submit Clinical
Laboratory Science for a change in major as a result of the semester hour
increase.
B. Request
for Change in Course Description and Prerequisite
1. MATH 183, Computer Algebra System Lab, 1 s.h.
Current: An
introduction to computer algebra systems in the study of algebra, geometry, and
calculus, focusing on multiple forms of representation, exploring conjectures,
problem solving, and communicating results.
(Except by special permission,
students must co-register in Math
133. Proficiency credit is available for
students with experience using a computer algebra system.)
Prereq: MATH 129 or MATH 131 or equivalent (C grade or
better), and co-registration in MATH 133 or by special permission.
Proposed: An
introduction to computer algebra systems in the study of calculus, focusing on
exploring conjectures, solving problems, and communicating the results. An opportunity for undergraduate research for
the interested student. (Except by special permission, students must
co-register in Math 231 and have some
computer programming experience.
Proficiency credit is available for students with experience using a
computer algebra system.)
Prereq: CS 211 and CS 212 (C grade or better) or CS 225
(C grade or better), and co-registration in MATH 231, or by permission of the
department chair.
MATH
183 was tabled at the October 19 CCPI meeting.
When
asked why the Mathematics prerequisites were eliminated in favor of Computer
Science prerequisites, Mathematics Chair Iraj Kalantari explained that the
Computer Algebra System discussed in MATH 183 is like a very sophisticated
calculator that allows analysis of mathematical topics. He said that requiring MATH 231 as a co-req
enables students to be more deeply aware of mathematical concepts, and that
having some sort of background in programming prior to this course is also
beneficial in order to fully exploit the powers of the software discussed in the
course.
CCPI discussed whether the phrase “for the interested
student” should be omitted from the last sentence of the catalog
description. The council decided,
however, that if the phrase is omitted, it might lead students to believe that
research is a primary objective of the entire course. Dr. Kalantari told CCPI that Mathematics wishes
to encourage undergraduate research, but to do so “gingerly.”
Corrections:
·
Change last
sentence of catalog description to read, “Provides
an opportunity for undergraduate research for the interested student.”
·
Under “Rationale
for Change” on p.2 of the request form, change the last sentence of the first
bullet to, “Math minors and those other (than math) majors requiring Math 133 but
not or Math 231 will not be required to take Math 183 any longer.” CCPI stated that it needs to be clarified
that students that take 231 do not have to take 183.
·
Change the first
sentence of the fourth bullet under “Rationale for Change” to, “The student
population of new Math 183 courses will mostly consist of mathematics,
meteorology, physics, and pre-engineering majors/minors.”

CCPI that BIOL 340 is included in the programs of some departments, but he
contacted those by email and did not receive any negative feedback to the
proposal.

To approve A&S 195 (Engel/Conover)
This course was previously approved by the WID Committee as
a WID course. It was noted that ENG 180
is required of all WID courses and should be added as a prereq. The question was raised whether the “examples
of scholarship from a multidisciplinary perspective” referenced in the catalog description
would be limited to Arts and Sciences, and Dr. Lian responded affirmatively. When asked if any other WIU majors have a
capstone requirement, Associate Dean Dan Wise responded that this tends to be
more common with interdisciplinary majors.

C. Requests for Changes in Options
1. Science/Chemistry – Teacher Certification
Motion: To approve change in
Science/Chemistry – Teacher Certification option (Woell/La Prad)
The question was raised whether any part of the
request could be combined or collapsed in order to keep the number of hours
within the original range. Biology
professor Laura Barden-Gabbei responded that the option has been reviewed very
carefully and no other way can be found to meet accreditation requirements. She explained that the methods and 482
classes are “bursting at the seams,” and that if anything is added to those
classes, they will become 5-6 s.h. courses rather than 3-4 s.h. She added that the current structure allows
each class to have its own primary focus instead of trying to “cram” additional
material into either of them. Dr.
Barden-Gabbei stated that in the two years she has worked on assessment for the
NCATE report, she has discovered gaps where concepts and indicators were to
have been addressed in the program. She
asserted that GEOL 112 should have been added to the option years ago. She
concluded that all of the proposed changes are directly related to how the program
must develop as a result of assessment.
CCPI suggested that Dr. Barden-Gabbei add this
additional rationale for the changes to the summary in order that senators will
see as it moves forward specific reasons for the additional hours and how
assessment needs are being addressed.
Dr. Barden-Gabbei stated that if the needs are not addressed and data
provided by the time of the NCATE assessment, the program will be in jeopardy.
