B. Use of FCS 121 as
Equivalent for PSY 237 for FCS Majors Only
This item was tabled at the November 3
meeting; CCPI expressed a need for clarification as to how the process of
articulation works and how IAI fits into that.
Registrar’s office representative Donna Williams provided the requested
information to CCPI members via email:
I did some research with Sara Jo Guy in admissions. In 1997, the
FCS department said that for their majors this course could be evaluated as FCS
121 because Life Span Development is a core course for all FCS majors. Based on
this information from the FCS department, the admissions office created a
"major page" for that particular course, meaning that it would be
articulated as FCS 121 If and Only If the student was an FCS major. That same
course has also been sent through the IAI major panel for a course in the PSY
major. So, if you are looking at a PSY major, IAI says it is a specific type of
PSY course. (We don't do much with IAI major panel stuff here at WIU, but that
information exists on the books anyway.) In fall 2005,
There are two sides to the argument for/against "major
page" articulations. Against says that it is not fair to give a different
course equivalency to transfer work based on what the student's major is. Two
students sitting side by side in the same class could transfer and have two
entirely different articulations. The normal procedure is to "lock"
the articulation once the student matriculates at WIU; if a student changes
majors, the original articulation still stands (and there are reasons that
"unlocking" the courses when a major is changed would not be
feasible). The other side says that courses taught by different departments are
sometimes similar in nature, as is the case for this Life Span Development
course. There are at least three departments that teach Life Span Development,
albeit from different perspectives. A department cannot substitute across
departmental lines without permission from CAGAS. If this course had been
articulated as a PSY elective, the student in FCS could not use it in the major
because it is not called FCS. I believe the major page was originally intended
to accommodate students in this type of situation.
Following the November 3 meeting, CAGAS Chair Ken Mietus was asked via email what that council wishes to see as a result of this discussion at CCPI. Dr. Mietus responded that CAGAS does not want anything specific to occur, but is just interested in alerting CCPI to the situation to see if there might be a potential problem. Following further discussion, CCPI members agreed that the issue of FCS 231 being articulated as equivalent to PSY 237 for FCS majors only is not one that CCPI should be considering further.

Gen Ed
Specification Requested for Division Change Request Forms
The
Faculty Senate Executive Committee has asked CCPI to consider adding to their
multipurpose forms a question as to whether the request involves a Gen Ed
course. The issue was raised at the
Executive Committee since Biology plans to change the division of some of their
courses and wondered if it was possible to do so during the General Education
review; it was then brought to ExCo’s attention that the current multipurpose
form on which division changes are requested does not indicate if a course is
Gen Ed or not. CCPI members noted that
the change would also seem to necessitate a signature line for CGE since if the
request is for a Gen Ed course, that council would need to also approve the
change.
Motion: To add a Council on General Education signature line
and the question “Is this course currently a Gen Ed course?” to the CCPI
multipurpose (Request for Change) forms. (Parsons/Neumann)
MOTION APPROVED 9 YES – 0 NO – 0 AB
The
Recording Secretary was asked to notify the Council on General Education of
this change to the forms.
VI. Reports
A.
Subcommittee
Report
Chairperson
Anderson expressed appreciation to Vicki Nicholson for preparing the chart of
Terms Related to Academic Programming discussed at the subcommittee meeting last
week. The subcommittee agreed on some of
the definitions of programs; Chairperson Anderson stated that once the new
“concentration” definition is agreed upon at subcommittee, it will come before
the full council. The completed chart
will also come before CCPI for approval before being submitted to the Senate
Executive Committee. The next meeting of
the CCPI subcommittee will be at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 29 in the Chicago
Room.
