A. Request
for New Course
1. ZOOL
408, Field Ornithology, 3 s.h.
Motion: To
return ZOOL 408 to the table for approval (Melkumian/Engel)
ZOOL 408 was tabled at the September 21 CCPI
meeting with a request that the Department of Biological Sciences provide
additional details regarding the differences between ZOOL 408 and 410.

B. Request
for Change in Credit Hours
1. MICR
200, Introductory Microbiology, 3 s.h.
Current: 3 s.h.
Proposed: 4 s.h.
Motion: To return MICR 200 to the table
for approval (Melkumian/Myers)
MICR 200 had been tabled at the September 21
CCPI meeting pending notification of affected departments, namely Chemistry,
Kinesiology, DFMH, and Health Sciences.
CCPI noted that DFMH and Kinesiology have apparently not been notified, Chemistry
did not respond to the email notification from Biology Chair Rick Anderson, and
Health Sciences opposes the change.
Council members discussed whether all that is necessary is for
departments to prove notification or if positive support from the affected
departments is required before approving a change. It was noted that this issue recently came up
in extensive programmatic changes undertaken by the Department of Dietetics,
Fashion Merchandising, and Hospitality.
Notation was also made that Biology’s Clinical Laboratory Science major
will be increased by 1 s.h. as a result of the change to MICR 200 and will need
to submit a change in major request to CCPI at a later date.
Motion:
To table MICR 200 until all affected departments have been notified of the
change and are strongly urged to reply to it (Melkumian/Myers)
MOTION
TO TABLE APPROVED 6 YES – 0 NO – 0 AB
C. Requests for Changes in Course
Prefixes, Titles and Descriptions
1. BIOL
102, Biological Diversity, 4 s.h.
Current: BIOL 102, Biological Diversity
A survey for science majors and minors of the features
of all major groups of microbes, plants, and animals, with detailed study of
the anatomy, physiology, and development of flowering plants and vertebrate
animals.
Proposed: BOT 200, Introduction to Plant Biology
Lecture and lab emphasize basic principles in plant
biology, including scientific inquiry, cell biology, genetics, ecology,
evolution, and diversity in plant anatomy and physiology.
Motion: To
return BIOL 102 to the table for approval (Melkumian/Myers)
BIOL 102 and 103 had been tabled at the
September 21 CCPI meeting pending consideration by the Council on General
Education and a letter from Chairperson Anderson regarding articulation. Registrar’s office representative Donna
Williams expressed concern that feeder schools that previously articulated to
BIOL 102/103 may not have offered much Botany or Zoology, and she wanted to
make sure that Chairperson Anderson wanted automatic articulation of BIOL 102/103
to BOT/ZOOL 200. The course request was
returned for CCPI reconsideration with a statement from Dr. Anderson
authorizing automatic articulation, as well as a statement from CGE that the
proposed changes “are tantamount to the original courses and are thus similarly
acceptable as Gen Ed courses.” Vicki
Nicholson of the Provost’s office noted that there will likely be conflicting
articulation between the campus and what is coming in at the state level from
IAI, although this can be dealt with after the fact.
Correction:
Change Effective Date to Fall 2007.
BIOL 102
APPROVED WITH CHANGE 5 YES – 0 NO – 1 AB
2. BIOL
103, Biological Principles, 4 s.h.
Current: BIOL 103, Biological Principles
An introduction to biology for science majors and
minors covering ecology, cells, cell metabolism, genetics, evolution, and
behavior.
Proposed: ZOOL 200, Introduction to Animal Biology
Lecture and lab emphasize basic principles in animal
biology, including scientific inquiry, cell biology, genetics, ecology,
evolution, and diversity in animal anatomy and physiology.
Motion: To return BIOL 103 to the table
for approval (Melkumian/Myers)
Biological Sciences professor Shawn Meagher
explained that Biology proposes to adopt a three-course sequence that will
include MICR 200, BOT 200, and ZOOL 200.
He explained that this will enable the same amount of students who
previously enrolled in BIOL 102 and 103 to be more spread out between the three
classes.
Correction:
Change Effective Date to Fall 2007.
BIOL 103 APPROVED WITH CHANGE 5 YES – 0 NO – 1 AB
D. Request for Change in Course Description,
Division, and Prerequisite
1. ZOOL 220, Invertebrate Zoology, 3 s.h.
Current: ZOOL 220
Structure,
evolution, behavior, and economic importance of invertebrate forms.
Prereq:
BIOL 102 and 103
Proposed: ZOOL 415
A study of invertebrate form and function as it
relates to taxonomy, evolution, ecology, behavior, and physiology. Laboratory will involve comparative
experimental and observational approaches.
Prereq: ZOOL 200
Motion: To return ZOOL 220 to the table
for approval (Melkumian/Myers)
ZOOL 220 had been tabled at the September 21 CCPI meeting
pending additional justification as to why the course should be a 400-level
rather than a 200-level course, which was subsequently provided.
ZOOL 220 APPROVED 5 YES – 0 NO – 1 AB

Services Nonprofit Organizations minor, and will replace RPTA 275.
One CCPI member
asked to what extent the course would overlap JOUR 329, Fundamentals of Public
Relations. RPTA professor Dean Zoerink
assured CCPI that RPTA 270 would provide only a cursory introduction to public
relations as a competency that should be developed when working with nonprofit
organizations but would not touch upon it in any depth.

Computer Science Chair Kathy Neumann stated following
changes in the Business core last spring, it was discovered that the microcomputer
applications minor needed to be adjusted to accommodate those marketing majors
who wish to take it as their minor. It
was decided that a change in the minor to accommodate the 11 affected students
would be a better strategy than specific case-by-case exemptions.
CHANGE TO MINOR APPROVED 5 YES – 0 NO – 1 AB
C. Request for Change in Course Title,
