F.      Use of FCS 121 as Equivalent for PSY 237 for FCS Majors Only

Chairperson Anderson reported that CAGAS has asked CCPI to consider the issue of whether or not allowing FCS 121 to articulate as the equivalent of PSY 237 for FCS majors only is considered to be a good thing.  The College of DuPage has a course titled PSY 237 which articulates into the WIU curriculum as a Psych elective but which counts as the equivalent of FCS 121 for FCS majors only.  CAGAS felt that FCS should either articulate as PSY 237 for everyone or for nobody.  According to CAGAS Chair Ken Mietus via email, this becomes an issue for CAGAS when non-FCS majors submit appeals to have FCS 121 count for PSY 237, which doesn’t happen often but does occur from time to time.

A question was raised regarding if the student transfers from FCS into another major, would the Human Well Being Gen Ed hours gained by having PSY 237 count as FCS 121 be taken away, but Donna Williams explained those hours would be locked.  The question was then asked if the College of DuPage student transfers from another major into FCS, could they then request that their PSY 237 count as FCS 121 for Gen Ed credit, and Ms. Williams responded this would be approved if the student brings it to the attention of the Registrar’s office.  CCPI members discussed whose prerogative it is if a class that is not Gen Ed transfers in and is accepted by a department as a Gen Ed class equivalent – the department’s decision or Council on General Education’s.  Although the email from CAGAS Chairperson Mietus had stated that perhaps IAI, in conjunction with representatives from Psychology, articulated the College of DuPage PSY 237 course as FCS 121 since both are courses on life span development, CCPI questioned whether IAI was involved at all in this decision.

CCPI expressed a need for clarification as to how the process of articulation works and how IAI fits into that.  Ms. Williams will check to determine if there was a direct articulation between the College of DuPage and Family and Consumer Sciences.

Motion: To table further discussion until the November 17 CCPI meeting (Woell/Melkumian)

MOTION TO TABLE APPROVED  7 YES – 0 NO – 0 AB

G.     Cross-Listing Undergraduate with Graduate Courses

Motion: To add discussion of Cross-Listing Undergraduate with Graduate Courses to the agenda (Neumann/Parsons)

MOTION APPROVED  7 YES – 0 NO – 0 AB

Ms. Williams explained that the issue arose when the Registrar’s office entered courses approved for cross-listing at the undergraduate level by CCPI and allowed all of them to be cross-listed at the graduate level, also, even though not all had requested and received graduate credit designation.  Associate Provost Baily submitted a request asking that the statement “CCPI approves 400-level cross-listing courses for undergraduate credit only,” be added to the Request for Cross-Listing New/Existing Courses form.  Ms. Nicholson suggested additional wording: “To receive approval for graduate-level credit, a request must also be submitted to the Graduate Council.”

Motion: To add both statements to the Request for Cross-Listing New/Existing Courses form (Neumann/George)

MOTION APPROVED  7 YES – 0 NO – 0 AB

H.     Letters of Support Prior to Request Going to Senate

Motion: To add discussion of Letters of Support to CCPI agenda (Neumann/Melkumian)

MOTION APPROVED  7 YES – 0 NO – 0 AB

Recording Secretary Annette Hamm explained that a change in major that was approved by CCPI on September 8 with the request that letters of support be obtained from four departments before going on to Senate is still awaiting two of the letters.  The department chair has attempted to obtain the letters of support but has been told that the request must still be discussed in faculty meetings in the two remaining departments.  He had expressed to Ms. Hamm the desire to submit the change in major to Faculty Senate with only two of the supporting letters while explaining to Senate that the other two have still not arrived.  CCPI reiterated that the request can only go forward to Faculty Senate if all four letters of support are obtained since the lack of all four letters may have changed the vote at CCPI if it was known that they were not obtainable.  A member noted that the lack of a response could also indicate that the department has a concern with the request.  Ms. Hamm stated she will work with the chair to obtain the remaining two letters of support before taking the request forward.

VI.  Reports
