II. Announcements
Chairperson
introduced new CCPI member Jeff Engel and Faculty Senate Chair Steve Rock. Dr. Rock told CCPI that senators really rely
on their expertise in considering new courses, majors and minors before they
come before Faculty Senate. Dr. Rock
stated that if changes in gen ed are proposed by the General Education Review
Committee, CCPI will be asked to look at those as well. He encouraged CCPI members to attend a forum
on the foreign language/global issues subcommittee report to be held at 3:30
Tuesday, September 26 in the Union Capitol Rooms and to provide feedback on the
report (http://www.wiu.edu/FacultySenate/FLGIrpt4-06.htm)
to senators. Dr. Rock also told CCPI
that the Council for International Education’s policies and procedures are
expected to be finalized this fall, which will add an additional layer to the
curriculum approval process and will be instrumental in consideration of the
proposed new international studies major.
This proposal will also come through CCPI at a later date.

B. Expectations of Service
on the Council
Chairperson
Parsons told members that CCPI is a very important council that deals with a
lot of different undergraduate curriculum issues, and that it is very important
that they consider how the various proposed curriculum requests blend across
campus. She stated that last year CCPI saw
a lot of issues requiring verification of communication between departments
where there may be overlap issues with proposed new courses.
C. Serving as Mentors for College
Curriculum Committees
Chairperson
Parsons told the members that since CCPI is a Senate committee with
representation from every college at WIU, it would be beneficial for its
members to serve as mentors for their respective college curriculum
committees. She stated that CCPI members
could act as sounding boards for departments that may need assistance with
proposals or changes. Chairperson
Parsons will set up meetings with each college curriculum committee that she
would attend along with the CCPI representatives of that college. She hopes that this may answer some questions
and catch some potential issues early in the process.
Members discussed whether it should be suggested to
college curriculum committees that they consider the timing of proposals so
that they are not all presented to CCPI at the last meeting of the year. It was suggested that there may be no
solution for this problem because course proposals must go through so many
steps before coming to CCPI.
V. Reports
A. CCPI Subcommittee on Academic Terms
Chairperson
Parsons stated that the purpose of the subcommittee is to attempt to
standardize language used for academic terms and what appears on
transcripts. The subcommittee has been
asked to define academic terms, examine the number of hours for majors, and
look at each major for best case/worst case scenarios of what a student would
need to do to graduate in that field.
She added Provost Rallo has stated that proposals for guidelines for new
majors that may be recommended by the subcommittee, such as maximum semester
hour requirements, will be directed only toward future proposals and will not
be retroactive. The subcommittee will
also determine a list of reasons why some majors must have credit hours above
the standard norms. Chairperson Parsons
asked the Senate Recording Secretary to set up subcommittee meetings for the
Thursday afternoons that CCPI does not meet.
B. Provost’s Report
Associate
Provost Barb Baily told members that the Emergency Management and
Telecommunications Management majors were approved by the IBHE.
Motion: To adjourn (Woell)

Council adjourned at 4:10 p.m.
