The meeting was called to order at 3:34 pm by Lori Baker-Sperry.
Minutes of May 5th, 2005 were approved.
Lori Baker-Sperry summarized the CGE Senate Report, noting one correction, that is detailed in the Faculty Senate minutes handout provided to CGE members.
A total of three volunteers are needed for the Senate
Subcommittee on Foreign Languages & Global Issues Requirement.
The Faculty Senate has suspended the Humanities Review by CGE until the General Education Review is completed.
Steve Rock, Faculty Senate Chair, summarizes the call by the Faculty Senate to the CGE to review the entire General Education curriculum. The Faculty Senate will appoint six additional faculty members (three with W course instruction experience) to assist in this endeavor. The Assessment Committee will have submitted their report to CGE and it is to be considered for the final CGE report. A new extended council, containing the Council and six senate selected members, will determine a recommendation for the structure of the General Education curriculum. Steve Rock recommends that CGE keep our evaluation and final report consistent with the University Strategic Plan. Discussion of the potential to solicit information and input from instructors, advisors, and all faculty for input into the General Education evaluation and final report. Discussion continues concerning how and when (1994?) General Education was previously evaluated. It was noted that the list of departments and courses offered have not been updated and should be considered in CGE’s evaluation. President Goldfarb had commented when he vetoed the removal of the W requirement, that the university-wide goals of writing and critical-thinking need to be incorporated into current General Education goals. Steve Rock will attempt to find a copy of the previous General Education review for CGE to review and consider as we plan our evaluation. Amy Carr and Lori Baker-Sperry will determine what WIU’s peer public institutions have for their General Education requirements and whether they closely mirror IAI, and will report to the CGE council at the next meeting. Steve Rock will assemble a list of last year’s and this semester’s instructors of W courses to assist us in soliciting input and information for the General Education evaluation.
Candace McLaughlin distributes copies of the newest version of the General Education handbook to all members.
Meeting adjourned at 4:24 pm.
