General Education Review Committee

The committee to review the General Education Curriculum is asked to perform a broad review of the General Education requirement. The Faculty Senate is asking the committee to make a recommendation regarding each of the following issues by May 2006 (with an interim report by January of 2006):

• An examination of the purpose and necessity of each individual category
• An examination of the number of required hours within each category
• An examination of the overall number of hours for the Gen Ed requirement
• An examination of the purpose and effectiveness of the W requirement within Gen Ed
• Any relevant issues that arise from the review and discussion process
• A review of the recommendation for the structure of General Education assessment prepared by the Task Force on the Assessment of General Education

The committee is to be composed of all members of CGE in addition to 3 faculty members teaching W courses and 3 additional faculty members appointed by Faculty Senate. Because the entirety of CGE will be participating in this committee’s work, the council is encouraged to use their regular meeting time and invite the 6 additional committee members at the Council’s convenience.

The committee must also engage the campus-wide community in the discussion of General Education review in a manner that facilitates participation of students, faculty, staff and administration (i.e. open forum discussions).
