The guitar studio at Western Illinois University is made up of both undergraduate and graduate level classical and jazz guitar students who are currently majoring in music at Western Illinois University. Undergraduate guitar students at WIU can choose from a wide variety of majors and minors including jazz studies, performance, music education, music therapy, music business and music composition.

Graduate guitar students participate in the core graduate curriculum, which includes music research, music history and music theory. In addition graduate guitar students will take a full complement of guitar lessons, ensembles, and electives geared toward each student's interest. Graduate students may major in musicology, composition, performance, music education, conducting and/or jazz studies (performance or composition tracks).

All guitar students at WIU are able to participate in many of the schools large and small ensembles and receive one-on-one lessons each week with Dr. Matthew Warnock. Some of the performance groups that guitar students are able to participate in are:

  • Jazz Guitar Ensemble
  • Classical Guitar Ensemble
  • Small Jazz Combos
  • Jazz Big Bands
  • Classical Chamber Ensembles

On top of their hour long weekly guitar lessons WIU guitar students also participate in weekly studio classes and workshops as part of their directed study.

Guest artists that have recently visited WIU's guitar studio include jazz guitarists Jack Grassel, Adam Smale and Roddy Ellias as well as classical guitarists Dr. Brad DeRoche and Tom Clippert. Guitar students are able to participate in masterclasses and workshops as well as work in one-on-one lessons with each guest artist that visits WIU.
