Jazz Guitar - Undergraduate Technique - Please prepare as much of the following technical requirements as possible.
- Two octave major scales and related modes
- Two octave melodic and harmonic minor scales and related modes
- Two octave arpeggios for Major7, Dom7, Min7, m7b5, dim7, and mM7
- Chord voicings for Maj7, Dom7, min7, m7b5, dim7 and mM7
- One chord melody study. The Joe Pass chord solo books as well as the Barry Galbraith chord melody books are encouraged for this part of the audition
- One pick study. The Barry Galbraith two part Bach inventions or any other single line classical study are encouraged for this part of the audition
One original transcription to be played with the recording or with a metronome or both Student must bring a CD with the tune on it and a stereo will be provided. The transcription does not have to be complete but should be at least 4 choruses on a blues chord progression or 2 choruses on a standard 32 bar progression. The transcription MUST be from the jazz tradition and preferably recorded before 1970. Eg. Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Barney Kessell, Jimmy Rainey, Herb Ellis, George Benson, Pat Martino or Lenny Breau Tunes - Pick two (2) from the list below. You may substitute pieces that are of a similar nature and level of difficulty if you prefer. Be prepared to play one of the following blues heads with at least 2 choruses of improvised soloing and comping on:
- Sunny Moon for Two
- Bag's Groove
- Billie's Bounce
- Blue Bossa
- Summertime
- Autumn Leaves
- Killer Joe
- Doxy
Jazz Guitar - Graduate Students should prepare ten (10) pieces that are reflective of the standard jazz repertoire. Students are encouraged to select pieces from a variety of styles including bebop, American Songbook, Latin Jazz and Modern Jazz
Classical Guitar - Undergraduate Technique - Please prepare as many of the following technical requirements as possible.
- Db, Ab, and E major two octaves
- Bb, F and C# melodic and harmonic minor two octaves
- E, A, and F major three octaves
- F# melodic and harmonic minor three octaves
- Chromatic scale starting on A three octaves
- All scales are to be done with im, mi, ia, ai, ma, am, and ima Mm = 84 with both triplets and sixteenth notes
- As well, all scales are to be played tremelando at Mm = 96 for triplets and sixteenth notes and Mm = 52 for sextuplets
- G major one octave compound triplet slur scale. Mm = 80
- G major and E minor scales in blocked thirds and sixths one octave. Mm = 80
- Arpeggios nos 31, 32, 25, 26, 29, 30, and 100 from the 120 studies for right hand development by Mauro Giuliani. Mm = 69
- Etude no 1 – Fernando Sor
- Etude no 16 – Leo Brouwer
- Prelude BWV 999 – JS Bach
- Prelude no 3 – Heitor Villa-Lobos
- Students will be asked to sight read a short, one page, piece of medium-level difficulty.
Classical Guitar - Graduate Students should prepare five (5) pieces of contrasting nature. The audition panel will choose three (3) pieces for the student to perform.
