Teaching Interests: Governmental emergency management as applied through the integrated emergency management system. Teaching is based on an understanding of disasters as complete systems and an application of analyses to these systems. Primary teaching interests include the relationships between natural hazards and disasters, technical team building, hazard and risk analysis, planning, and risk reduction. Additional teaching interests include emergency preparedness and response and transportation security. Courses taught include: Foundations of Emergency Management, Research Methods in Emergency Management, Hazard Mitigation, Emergency Preparedness, Disaster Analysis, Maritime Transportation Security, Transportation Security, Modern Natural Disasters, and Principles of Narural Hazards Risk Reduction.
Research Interests: Natural hazards and mitigation/recovery and intergovernmental coordination. Approaches include disaster modeling, analysis and planning for most major natural hazards, based on field and literature research into disaster events, applying the four phases of comprehensive emergency management to complex disaster systems and models. Research interests in disaster preparedness/response include NIMS applications in public health sectors.
