Ensuring Success for English Language Learners
Presentation by Dr. Margarita Calderón
Monday, April 6, 2009, 5:30 p.m., HH78

Margarita CalderónDr. Margarita Calderón, a native of Juarez, Mexico, and Professor and Senior Research Scientist at the Johns Hopkins University School of Education, will be on Western Illinois University's Macomb campus to meet with students, faculty and staff on Monday, April 6, 2009. Dr. Calderón will meet with students in several classes and with COEHS faculty during the day and present the public lecture, "Ensuring Success for English Language Learners by Teaching Integrated Language, Literacy and Content" at 5:30 p.m. in Horrabin Hall 78.

Professor Calderón earned a BA in English literature before focusing her MA work on linguistics and her doctoral study on education and organizational development, with an emphasis on English Language Learners (ELL) and, more generally, education for all struggling readers. After teaching in and directing the University of California, Santa Barbara, bilingual/English as a Second Language credential programs, she was invited to join the Johns Hopkins University School of Education where she has conducted multiple research projects on the professional development of middle and secondary school teachers of ELL as well as English immersion, transitional, and two-way bilingual programs.

Dr. Calderón's education and professional experience have led her to create a framework that integrates linguistics, reading, pedagogy, and professional development. Her mission is to help teachers be successful with ELL and all others students by providing the support mechanisms, such as effective coaching protocols and appropriate curriculum, teachers need.

The author of over 100 articles, chapters, books, and teacher training manuals, her most recent publications include Teaching Reading to English Language Learners, Grades 6-12: A Framework for Improving Achievement in the Content Areas and Reading Instructional Goals for Older Readers.

WIU Professor of Educational and Interdisciplinary Studies, Dr. Gloria Delany-Barmann, who is coordinating Dr. Calderón's visit, suggests that anyone who is interested in learning essential strategies to engage and include ELL in regular classrooms, in expanding their familiarity with resources for ELL and reading programs, or in increasing their effectiveness when working with their students, whatever their background, can benefit from Dr. Calderón's presentation and is encouraged to attend.

This program is free and open to the public. It is being sponsored by Western Illinois University's Expanding Cultural Diversity Project. For further information, contact Dr. Gloria Delany-Barmann at ga-delany-barmann@wiu.edu or 309-298-1045.
