YWCA hosts National Conversation on Race
October 29-30, 2009
YWCA of Rockford, IL

YWCA logoRockford, IL (August 31, 2009) - For 150 years, the YWCA mission has been eliminating racism and empowering women.  To achieve the elimination of racism, the YWCA of Rockford will assist the community in learning to talk about race and racism at its National Conversation on Race:  Walking Each Other Home, facilitated by film maker and master diversity trainer, Lee Mun Wah, on October 29 and 30 at Rockford College.   Come join us for an opportunity to have an honest discussion on race and learn what it will take for us to have a compassionate relationship with one another.

This is the first time the National Conversation on Race has been facilitated outside the Berkley, CA area; the YWCA of Rockford has secured the only workshop for the mid-west region.  The workshop begins October 29, 6:00 – 9:30 p.m. consists of an evening viewing of “Last Chance for Eden” followed by a facilitated dialogue by Lee Mun Wah.  Last Chance for Eden is about nine men and women who spend time together talking about racism, struggling to find a way to understand each other’s differences by asking one another questions they have always wanted answered.  Continuing October 30, 9:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m., this workshop will provide tools needed to challenge yourself and those around you to look at the complex issues of race and diversity in our community, fearlessly and honestly.   Participants will feel more prepared to discuss race and racism and can begin to heal the rift in our community.

YWCA calls upon everyone who is serious about eliminating racism and healing our community to join us and our community partners in this exciting endeavor.  Presenting Partners of this community event are Rockford College, United Way, Office of the Winnebago County States Attorney, YMCA of Rock River Valley, Rock Valley College, and the Rockford Register Star; Advocacy Partners are WIFR and WREX television stations.  To register, please visit our website:  www.ywca.org/rockford .
