About the Mobile Computing Task Force
The Mobile Computing Task Force (MCTF) at Western Illinois University assists in establishing the framework for using mobile information technologies to promote the University’s core values: academic excellence, educational opportunity, social responsibility, and personal growth.
As part of Western Illinois University’s Mobile Computing Task Force, approximately 30 committee members are investigating and examining how mobile technological devices can aid learning opportunities and provide Western’s students with additional technology tools to explore and create meaningful learning experiences.

Research with the iPad
In this presentation, Dr. Jess White will present ideas and recommendations for using an iPad as a research tool. We will review applications (apps) that provide tools for reading and organizing readings, preparing documents and drafts, organizing research questions and thoughts, organizing resources from the Internet, using Twitter in a research capacity, and others that make the iPad a useful research aid. The information presented will be relevant to all fields - all are welcome to share their own experiences with using an iPad. [Note: although not the focus of the presentation, many of these applications are also available for the iTouch and Android devices - users of these are also welcome! Participants may also want to have the ability at the time to download applications covered in the presentation (some are free, whereas others are usually available for under $5), although this is not required.]

Your Third Identity- Online
Mobile devices enable 24/7/365 connectivity with people, information, and services. Without geographical limitations, instantaneous access and communication occurs through calls, texts, and instant messages. Technology allows sharing of pictures and information within seconds of an occurrence. This ubiquitous dissemination of information is wonderful; however, its advent has created a new entity- your third identity. The goal of this presentation is to increase awareness as to the impact of your third identity, your online identity, on your future.

WISER for Android
The first release of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders (WISER) for Android is now available.
WISER (Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders) is a mobile application designed to assist first responders in hazardous material incidents.
First responders in general, and HAZMAT units in particular, must make many decisions quickly in handling hazardous-materials incidents. They need accurate information about the hazardous substances, the emergency resources available, and the surrounding environmental conditions to save lives and minimize the impact on the environment and physical property. The WISER application extracts content from TOXNET’s Hazardous Substances Data Bank (HSDB), an authoritative, peer-reviewed information resource maintained by the National Library of Medicine, and places that information into the hands of those who need it most.
