My name is David R. Briggs. I am a one-armed woodcarver and that is a long story in itself. I am a self-taught carver and did not take up the hobby until after I lost my right arm (I was right handed).
I planted the sycamore tree that these spoons were carved from in nineteen seventy-nine. The soft maple tree that once stood in its place was taken down by an ice storm on Good Friday nineteen seventy-eight.
The sycamore tree is nearly eighty feet high and shades my house in the summertime. The leaves seem to grow larger throughout the summer. Over the years I have had to prune the lower limbs off as they grew into the power lines or too near the house. The limbs that provided these spoons were hanging out over the road (I did not want to face any angry truck drivers).
I carved a total of seven spoons out of the green wood. I use knives and chisels to carve the wet wood and then I sand them after the wood dries a week or two. The teardrop shape just below the hole in the handle is kind of my trademark. The spoons are finished in walnut oil. If you have allergies to nuts I do not recommend that the spoons be used for cooking. Otherwise they should be fine walnut oil can be used on salad.
