- John Hallwas, is noted in this region as our historian. Through his books and anthologies, Hallwas paints a picture of places and significant events that shaped west-central Illinois over the years. Hallwas has been a professor in Western’s English Department since 1970. Since 1979 he has also served as director or Regional Collections and Archives in Western’s Library Archives. He has written columns for newspapers, has served as the editor of two journals, and has had a weekly program on National Public Radio. Some of his works include: The Bootlegger; Cultures in Conflict: A Documentary History of the Mormon War in Illinois; First Century: A Pictorial History of WIU; Illinois Literature: The 19th Century; Keokuk & the Great Dam; Kingdom on the Mississippi Revisited: Nauvoo in Mormon History; The Legacy of the Mines: Memoirs of Coal Mining in Fulton County; Macomb: A Pictorial History; McDonough County Heritage; McDonough County Historic Sites; The Poems of H: The Lost Poet of Lincoln’s Springfield; and Spoon River Anthology.
