K-12 Certification
This program is designed for individuals wanting to teach special education in Illinois. Successful completion of the program qualifies an individual to teach in a cross categorical setting at the K-12 level. The program covers the following areas:
- Learning Disabilities
- Social/Emotional Disorders (Behavior Disorders)
- Mental Disabilities (Educable, Trainable, Severe)
- Autism
- Traumatic Brain Injury
- Physical Disabilities
- Other Health Impairments
The new program is based on the Illinois Learning Standards. In addition to special education course work, the program includes course work in technology, literacy, "regular" elementary methods, and general education. Students are required to complete field experiences in public schools throughout their program and have the opportunity to choose one of their field experiences to enhance their understanding of working with a specific age or ability grouping. The final experience will be student teaching for an entire semester, split between an elementary and a secondary setting.
Coursework is sequential and is designed to build upon previous content. Therefore, students must complete the program in a specific sequence, mastering one course before moving on to the next. The program requires that students be fully accepted into the Teacher Education Program at WIU before moving into advance level course work. Students must establish and maintain a 2.75 cumulative and major GPA and must earn a minimum grade of "C" for all special education course work, field experiences, and professional education course work. Specific course work in general education has been chosen by faculty to enhance the knowledge and understanding that special education teachers need to have to teach curriculum content to special education students. Majors are required to complete the Teacher Education Portfolio and reflective papers, as well as meet all requirements of the Teacher Education Program. In addition to successfully completing the program, students will be required to pass all required state certification tests before qualifying for a teaching certificate.
