Department PAA Activities

Teaching/Primary Duties   (minimum of 8 points required for PAA)

*Faculty must have received a rating (on the most recent retention, promotion, tenure, or four-year appraisal evaluation)

 that meets Tenure requirements in Teaching/Primary Duties in order to be eligible to apply for a PAA

 

 Assigned Duties (duties for which one receives ACEs)

 

  • 1 point earned for each ACE over 18 in an Academic year

 

Note:  Teaching assignments over 18 ACEs and any non-teaching or other Primary Duties for which one receives ACEs will fall under this area.

  

 Unassigned Duties (duties for which one doesn’t receive ACEs)

 

Possible points awarded for each of the following:

 

  • 3 pt for each master’s or honor’s thesis advised and completed
  • 1 pt for each graduate project advised and completed
  • 1 pt. for each 17 undergraduate students assigned to advise
  • 1 pt for each Departmental Independent Study/Readings student earning a final grade
  • 1 pt for the development of a new course
  • 1 pt for each set of peer reviews, conducted in adherence with Department Criteria
  • 2 pt for each Undergraduate Research Day (URD) project advised and presented
  • 1 pt for serving as a member on a thesis or project committee (for each completed thesis/project)

Scholarly/Professional Activities  (minimum of 8 points required for PAA)

Possible points awarded in the following categories:

Category A:  Higher level contributions (3 pts. each)

  • Publication of a book
  • Publication of a journal article in a national venue
  • Major grant received
  • An equivalent publication in a peer-reviewed venue

Category B:  Moderate level contributions (2 pts. each)

  • Delivery of peer reviewed conference paper (national/regional/state-level)
  • Publication of a Chapter in a book
  • Publication of a Monograph
  • Publication of journal article in a regional venue
  • Moderate level grant received
  • An equivalent professional or scholarly activity

Category C:  Lower level contributions  (1 pt. each)

  • Publication in a state-level journal
  • Publication of a Book Review
  • Publication of an Abstract
  • Panel presentation at a professional conference
  • Editor of national or regional journal
  • Chair of a panel at conference
  • An equivalent professional or scholarly activity

University//Community Service (minimum of 8 points required)   

Possible points awarded in the following categories.  For service in multiple-year terms, the faculty member is to receive the prorated number (rounded up to the nearest whole number) of points for each year (e.g., a three-year term on Faculty Senate – worth a total of three points - may earn 1 point for each year of service ).  Points are awarded only for service for which a faculty member is not already receiving ACEs.

Category A:  (3 pts. each)

  • Member of Faculty Senate (3 year term -- one point per year)
  • Significant leadership position in one’s professional organization
  • Equivalent service activity

Category B:  (2pts. each)

  • Member of a major University Council that meets at least one-to-two times a month (examples:  CAGAS, CCPI, etc.) (2 points to be awarded at the end of the 3 year term) 
  • Chair, Department Personnel Committee (2 points per year of service)
  • Chair of standing department committee
  • Member, University Professionals of Illinois (UPI) Executive Committee
  • Equivalent service activity

Category C:  (1 pt. each) 

  • Member, UPI Negotiating Team (if not already receiving ACEs) (one point each year of service)
  • Member, Search Committee for University President or Provost/Academic Vice President
  • Member, Search Committee for University President or Provost/Academic Vice President
  • Member, standing department  or college committee
  • Non-juried presentation or workshop
  • Equivalent service activity

Bonus Points   

Points earned for activities listed in the Bonus Points category may be applied to meet the minimum number of points required in the appropriate area of responsibility (teaching/primary duties, scholarly/professional activities, or university/community service). These points may be awarded for an activity not listed under teaching/primary duties, scholarly/professional activities, university/community service, or they may be additional points given for extraordinary performance.  Under Bonus Points a faculty member who receives ACEs may also receive points based on the level of responsibility or if a major contribution is made. 


Bonus points can be earned for exceptional performance in the following areas:

·         Additional points for publication of major book or exceptional artistic recognition

·         Additional points for being the recipient of a major grant

·         Distinguished Faculty Lecturer (8 points)

·         University or College Excellence Award (4 points each)

·         Additional points for service wherein one receives ACEs (Chair, Faculty Senate;  Chair, CAGAS;  Chapter President, UPI; Chair, CCPI; Director, CITR;  Associate Director, Honors) -- (2 points per year)

·         Other activity of comparable value

Overload Points 

Faculty may choose to count ACEs over 22 as “points” rather than overload for monetary compensation.
