Skype Instructions and Tips

Two ways to schedule a Skype appointment:

  1. Call the UAASC office between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. at 309-298-1871 to set up a 30-minute appointment
  2. Call tutors directly between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. on Mondays and 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. on Wednesdays at 309-298-3752 for math and science, and 309-298-3742 for other tutoring subjects.

How to Skype with our tutors:

  1. Make sure you have a webcam.
  2. Install Skype on your computer.
  3. Create a free Skype account.
  4. Call University Advising and Academic Services Center between 8: 00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. at 309-298-1871 to set up a 30-minute appointment -or- contact tutors directly between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. on Mondays and 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. on Wednesdays to schedule an appointment.

One hour or more before your appointment:

  1. Add either the math and science tutor (uaascmathtutor) or other subject tutor (uaasc.tutor) to your contact list in Skype.
  2. Check your Internet connection.
  3. Call tutor via Skype to begin your session at your prearranged appointment time.
  4. You and your tutor should be able to see each other via Skype at the appointed time. If you do not see the tutor, check the camera icon at the bottom of the window. If there is a red diagonal bar across it, click the camera icon to activate the camera view
    1. You and your tutor will discuss how to proceed as far as chatting vs. talking and sharing files vs. sharing your screen.
    2. Engage in the tutoring.
    3. At the end of a tutoring session, click the red phone icon to end the Skype call.

Tips:

  • If you want to talk to the tutor instead of typing back and forth, make sure there is no diagonal red bar across the microphone icon (also at the bottom).
  • To control the volume, look for the sound icon at the top, right of the window.  
  • If you prefer to type back and forth to the tutor:
    • Click the microphone icon, which will put the diagonal red bar back.
    • Click the plus (+) sign at the bottom of the window.
    • Select Instant Messaging from the drop-down menu.
  • To send a file, you need to be in “instant messaging” mode. Click the plus (+) sign at the bottom of the window and select “Share Files” from the drop-down menu. You should be able to see both the text and the tutor’s image.
