Honors Council of the Illinois Region Hosted Spring Conference
For over twenty years the HCIR (Honors Council of the Illinois Region) Spring Conference has brought students together from all across Illinois and often the surrounding region. Students present original research and scholarship and enjoy meeting their peers from other institutions. The conference provides a welcoming, constructive environment in which students can discuss their research and learn and grow from the experience. Honors faculty and directors preside over the student sessions and meet with one another to share ideas and concerns about Honors Education.
The Spring 2008 Conference took place at Western Illinois University—Quad Cities Campus on March 1, 2008. About 100 honors students, faculty, advisors and directors attended, representing twenty colleges and universities. Fifteen directors and professors moderated 40 poster, podium, and panel presentations made by 44 students who shared current research covering the range of academic disciplines, from literature, history, and arts to science and mathematics.
From the Centennial Honors College at WIU--Brooke Bauma presented "The Development of an Honors Portfolio" and Carla Webb presented "Using Principal Component Analysis to Extract Meaning from Text."
Bill Knox, Director of the Western Illinois University Centennial Honors College, which sponsored the event, and President of the HCIR, noted that “this is the first time in memory that WIU has hosted this state-wide gathering of outstanding students.” He thanked all the participants for “an outstanding day of intellectual sharing and fellowship” and outgoing HCIR President Tom Sawyer for his advice and mentorship. He went on to say, “It was particularly gratifying since normally the conference does not attract this many participants when held outside of the greater Chicago area.”
The event was made possible by the support of Western Illinois University President Al Goldfarb, Provost Jack Thomas, Special Assistant to the President at the Quad Cities Joe Rives, and the HCIR through the offices of
Secretary-Treasurer
Bonnie Irwin.
