WIU Broadcasting Students Win Awards for Best in the Nation
The student-produced television newscast, "Live at Four," was named the top newscast in the nation during the 77th annual Intercollegiate Broadcasting System's (IBS) awards Saturday, March 4 in New York.
The nation's top award went to the 30-minute live production that aired Nov. 17, 2016 when students reported live from Canton, IL, one day after a major gas explosion downtown.
NEWS3 students Emily Manley, a senior broadcasting major from Highland, IL; Megan Sanchez, a senior broadcasting major from Bettendorf, IA; Dan White, a senior broadcasting major from La Grange Highlands, IL; and Cora English, a senior broadcasting major from Bushnell, IL, led news staff in the production and execution of the newscast.

In addition, for the second year, Western Illinois University senior broadcasting major Redrick Terry, of Rock Island, IL, has been honored with the Best Video Play-By-Play Award by the National Broadcasting System (NBS) during its convention in New York last weekend.

College Choice Ranks WIU Among the Best Online Colleges in Illinois
College Choice, an independent online publication dedicated to helping students and their families find the right college, has recognized Western Illinois University as a 2017 Best Online College in Illinois. Western, which is number four on the list, was among eight Illinois public universities ranked in the top 23 as a Best Online College.
According to College Choice, the 2017 ranking for the Best Online Colleges in Illinois is developed by reviewing data from multiple sources, including the National Center for Education Statistics' IPEDS database, Payscale, U.S.News and World Report and individual college websites. Factors reviewed include academic quality and return on investment.
WIU offers 462 online classes (318 undergraduate; 143 graduate) and seven degree programs, including the longstanding Bachelor of Arts in General Studies (BGS), which offers students the option of obtaining their degree entirely via distance learning opportunities, or a combination of on-campus and distance learning classes.
Sutton: 2017 Distinguished Faculty Lecturer
Christopher Sutton, professor of geography, has been named the Western Illinois University 2017 Distinguished Faculty Lecturer. He presented "The Power of Maps" at the annual lecture last month.
Sutton joined Western's faculty in 1998 as assistant professor and environmental studies minor adviser in the Department of Geography, after working as an adjunct instructor at the University of Denver and assistant professor at Northwestern State University. During his tenure at Western, he has served as the environmental studies minor adviser; graduate program coordinator, and also as department chair from 2002-06.
Western has honored outstanding faculty for 48 years with an annual award, first named the Annual Faculty Lecturer and now known as the Distinguished Faculty Lecturer. In 1969, Victor Hicken, history, presented "Swing of the Pendulum" as the inaugural Faculty Lecturer.
