WIU Leads the Summit League Fall Academic Team

Summit League logoWestern Illinois student-athletes not only turned in the best cumulative semester GPA in athletics department history (3.15 in Fall 2009), the Leathernecks also paced the Summit League with the most selections to the Academic All-Summit League squad.

WIU led the way with 63 selections to the Academic All-Summit League squad, covering the fall sports of: men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball.

2010 Football Schedule Released

A season-opening game at Hanson Field, one of six home games in all, Rockyand a game at Big 10 Conference member Purdue highlight the 2010 Western Illinois Football schedule. Dr. Tim Van Alstine, Assistant Vice President for Student Services/Director of Athletics, made the announcement on January 12.

Kickoff times and ticket prices will be announced at a later date.

Record-Setting Semester for Student-Athlete GPA's

WIU Athletics logoWestern Illinois University student-athletes turned in an unprecedented semester in the classroom. Upon completion of the Fall 2009 semester, the 401 Leatherneck student-athletes combined for a 3.15 GPA, the second-straight semester posting at least a 3.0, and highest semester cumulative GPA in Athletics Department history.

During the fall semester 233 recorded a minimum 3.0 GPA (58 percent of the total student-athlete body), and of that number 53 student-athletes posted a perfect 4.0 GPA.

Pankratz Lends a Hand in Costa Rica

Senior softball player Lori Pankratz spent time in Costa Rica with Wesley United Methodist Church volunteering at local orphanages and churches on January 5-16.

Pankratz and the group of 12 people delivered over 100 toiletry kits to children in the community, provided day care services to parents who can not afford it and built a concrete retaining wall at a playground site throughout their time in Costa Rica. On the last few days of the trip, the group had some free time to do site seeing.
