Social and Academic Events Held
All of us at the Centennial Honors College hope you had a great holiday! Before Centennial Honors College students left campus for the winter holidays, they not only completed papers and exams, but also had time for social and academic events.
On Tuesday, November 3, three Centennial Honors College students—all members of Professor Amy Patrick’s General Honors 101 “Environmental Literature” class—presented the panel, “Perspectives on Sustainability,” as part of the Fall 2009 Sustainability Brownbagger Series. Amy Jelinek addressed the action that individuals can take to make sustainability a part of their everyday lives. Abby Meads focused on the “big ideas” in sustainability and the need for students to know why they should care about it. Joshua Wood combined his study and family business experience to highlight topics as diverse as the move toward green construction practices and projects, the Kyoto Protocol, and the “American attitude” toward greening efforts. The Centennial Honors College and the Sustainability Brownbagger Committee thank Professor Patrick for organizing the panel and these students for making an informative and inspiring presentation.
On November 17, the Student Honors Association (SHA) held its annual International Dinner. SHA officers and other Honors students prepared and served the meal for students from a number of nations. About fifty international students and their hosts enjoyed a spaghetti dinner, homemade cookies, and—especially—each other’s company!
Centennial Honors College student David Siedal won the fourth-place award at an international competition sponsored by the IEEE Association in Taiwan on November 19. David is a senior double majoring in Manufacturing Engineering Technology and Graphic Communication. Under the direction of Professor Garrett Hunter (Engineering Technology), the prize-winning project, part of the Digital Process Control Competition, was entitled “Part Identification Using Opposed Sensor Triangulation.” Congratulations David!
On Tuesday, December 8, the Student Honors Association e-board held a going-away party for two longtime members. Scott Hallock will do his LEJA internship during the spring semester, while Chrissy Coughlin graduated December 19 along with 21 other Honors College students. Both Scott and Chrissy have been active members of SHA and their contributions to SHA and the Honors College will be missed. Best wishes and good luck to Honors LEJA intern Scott and Centennial Honors College alumna Chrissy!
