Seven Alumni to Serve on Alumni Council

Seven new members will serve on the Western Illinois University Alumni Council for the 2013-2014 year. The new members include Eldon Brown '96, Amber Duncan '00, Kort McCulley '04 '06, Joe Roselieb '07 '09, Ty Taylor '79, Tom Tomaszewski '70 '72 and Shane Van Vleet '02.

Comprised of 25 alumni appointed to three-year terms and the president of the Student Alumni Association, the Alumni Council represents the interests of Western's more than 117,000 alumni. Members serve as liaisons to various University areas and on advisory boards. The council assists in the recruitment of students, selects Alumni Award recipients and was instrumental in establishing the Student Alumni Association. The council meets on a quarterly basis.

Jeff McElroy '97, an attorney in Yorkville, Ill., serves as president.

Career Services and Alumni Association Partner

We are excited to announce a new partnership between the Western Illinois University Office of Career Services and your WIU Alumni Association in an effort to better serve our alumni and student population. Through the new program, we will offer more employment opportunities to current WIU students and alumni. Career Services provides comprehensive services to educate students and alumni on how to create and achieve their personal career goals with career planning and preparation, job search strategies, critiquing resumes and cover letters, conducting mock interviews, and providing advice for transitioning into the workforce. Last year, Career Services assisted over 4,000 students and alumni with their career preparation. The department also hosts three career fairs every year that are open to the public. Alumni are encouraged to attend these fairs for job searching purposes or to bring your company to recruit quality WIU students! For the past two years, Career Services has offered a $25 discount for any company that brings a WIU alumnus as part of their recruiting team. This year, the Fall Career Fair will be held on Tuesday, October 1st and the Law Enforcement & Justice Administration Career Fair will be held on Tuesday, September 17th.

“Even though you have left campus, you still have access to any of our services,” said Martin Kral, Director of Career Services. “We are here to assist students and alumni in any way that we can, whether they are re-careering into a new profession or are seeking ways to improve a resume. We hope alumni will contact us with any and all questions and we look forward to serving the alumni population in any way that we can!”

WIU to Increase Admissions Standards

Beginning with the Fall 2014 semester, Western Illinois University will increase admissions standards for new freshmen. The University's Council of Admission, Graduation, and Academic Standards and the Faculty Senate recently voted to support the change in admissions standards, with the approval of President Jack Thomas and Provost and Academic Vice President Ken Hawkinson '78 '79.

"Great universities demonstrate a deep understanding of their students. Our new admissions standards represent students who have the greatest potential for academic success," Thomas noted. "This change in admissions standards represents a multi-year analysis of our students. WIU will continue to place our priorities firmly on student success. While we are increasing our admissions standards, we will continue to be committed to our core value of educational opportunity for those who demonstrate the potential to succeed."

BOT Approves 4.5% All-Costs Increase

The Western Illinois University Board of Trustees approved a 4.5 percent increase in all-costs (tuition, fees and room and board) for new undergraduate students on the WIU-Macomb campus in Fall 2013 at the board's meeting on June 7. Tuition, fees and room and board are guaranteed for four years, so students entering in Fall 2013 will not see any change in their total costs. The all-costs increase averages approximately 1.13 percent per year. Last year's all-costs increase was also 4.5 percent.

Undergraduate students entering Western's Macomb campus in Fall 2013 will be charged $8,405.40 in annual tuition, based on 15 hours per semester at a $280.18 per credit hour rate ($13.11 more than the Fall 2012 tuition rate of $267.07 per credit hour). The tuition rate is $254.95 per credit hour for students who entered in Fall 2011 and $240.65 per credit hour for students who entered in Fall 2010. Graduate tuition for Macomb campus students entering in Fall 2013 will be $7,415.04, based on 24 credit hours per year ($308.96 per credit hour compared to $294.52 in Fall 2012).
