Centennial Honors College

Centennial Honors College Hosted Pre-Law Symposium

The Centennial Honors College, Home of the Pre-Law Minor, with its on- and off-campus sponsors, held the seventh annual Pre-Law Symposium on Monday, February 18, at the University Union Lamoine Room.

Aaron GallowayThe program began with a panel from the Northern Illinois University College of Law which addressed preparing for, applying to, and making the most of law school. Leading the informative discussion and question and answer session was Sandra Polanco, the Assistant Director of Admissions and Financial Aid.

Joining her were two WIU alumni. Aaron Galloway graduated from Western Illinois University in July 2007, with a double major in Economics and Psychology, as well as a minor in honors pre-law. Mr. Galloway is in his first year of law school and he also serves in the Illinois Army National Guard.

Brett Jansen attended Western Illinois University from 1995 to 1999. He graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Law Enforcement and Justice Administration, with minors in Psychology and Computer Science.  After graduation, he worked as a Deputy with the Adams County Sheriff's Department.  In 2006, Brett began studying law at Northern Illinois University College of Law.  He is currently in his second year.

Keith M. Shank, Manager of the Illinois Endangered Species Consultation Program for the Department of Natural Resources, delivered the keynote address.  He also served seventeen years with the Office of Surface Mining, U.S. Department of the Interior, where he headed the Branch of Abandoned Mined Land Reclamation and the Branch of Program Evaluation in the OSM Springfield, Illinois, Field Office.

His address, supporting this year's campus theme of Environmental Sustainability, was “The Third Wave Paradigm: Understanding the Context of Environmental Law in Illinois, ” which traced the increasingly complex connections between law and environment.

A reception followed.
