WIU Sends Our Condolences to NIU
The Western Illinois University community immediately sent its thoughts and condolences to the students, faculty and staff at Northern Illinois University where six individuals were killed on February 14 by a lone gunman, who also killed himself. President Al Goldfarb offered these words to our Northern colleagues, "Our hearts go out to the victims and their families. The University extends its thoughts and deepest sympathies to the Northern Illinois community."
Many across campus joined President Goldfarb in remembering NIU. The University website's colors were changed to red and black, reflecting solidarity with the NIU Huskies. The WIU Alumni Association took down its Alumni Event photo on its home webpage and replaced it with the NIU black ribbon. Many faculty, staff and students attended a vigil in the University Union; another was held on the Quad Cities campus. The Student Government Association displayed a banner in the Union Concourse where everyone has been asked to write messages to Northern. At the end of February, it was sent to NIU, showing them how their neighbors to the southwest are thinking of them.

Show Your WIU Pride
Make each Friday a "Purple and Gold Day!"
Western Illinois University staff, students, faculty and alumni are encouraged to wear purple and gold on Fridays to express their school spirit and to show their support not only for Western's athletic teams, but to demonstrate their overall pride for the University.
Western's school colors were chosen more than 100 years ago due to the "vast golden prairie strewn with purple coneflowers" surrounding the University.
If you are in need of any purple and gold apparel, you can find a few options on the Alumni website. Click here to start shopping.
