Spring Disability Awareness Week Starts March 24

Spring Disability Awareness Week 2008 is approaching and this year, it is going to be bigger and better than ever. Through the collaborative efforts of Disability Support Services, the students of RPTA 251, Student Therapeutic Recreational Society, Students for Disability Awareness, Equal Opportunity and Access, the Spencer Recreation Center, and the departments of Psychology, History and RPTA, a number of activities has been planned to expose the campus community to a variety of matters facing individuals with disabilities.

The week starts with a kickoff reception and student panel on Monday, March 24. Other events include tours of accessible housing and Hanson Field, accessible rock wall climbing and a faculty awareness seminar. Disability Awareness Day will be held on Thursday, March 27 in the Spencer Recreation Center where in addition to RPTA 251 and Students for Disability Awareness activities, the University Counseling Center, the Psychology Clinic, the West Central Illinois Center for Independent Living and the Macomb Park District will host a campus and community resource fair. The focus of Disability Awareness Day is twofold: to highlight the barriers an individual with a disability might face in a recreational setting and also to showcase adaptive equipment and activities that break down those barriers. The week ends with the annual wheelchair basketball tournament at the Spencer Recreation Center on Saturday, March 29.

If you need a special accommodation to participate fully in this program/event or if you have special dietary needs, please contact Tara Miller or Gretchen Steil Weiss of Disability Support Services at 309-298-2512. Please allow sufficient time to arrange the accommodation. A designated deadline for submission may be included, but every effort must be made to accommodate if a request is made beyond the deadline.
