Col. Rock III (Rocky) Turns Two - Text Rocky to 84700

RockyHe's a charmer who never fails to elicit smiles -- or a chorus of "aww's" -- whenever he enters a room. Quick to pose for a photo or give a high five, Col. Rock III (aka Rocky) is a beloved member of the Western Illinois University community and is the symbol for Western's trademarked "Leathernecks" nickname.

This University's four-legged friend will mark his second birthday March 3. Col. Rock III (and his owner) were in the University Union Concourse Wednesday, Feb. 29 giving out cupcakes to celebrate his special day with his WIU friends.

From the moment he joined the WIU family in May 2010 as a 10-week-old pup, Rocky has been the center of attention. Joe Roselieb '07 MS '09, director of residential facilities at Western, and Carisa Swanson '08, a kindergarten teacher in Astoria (IL), are Rocky's "people," providing him with a loving home, teaching him tricks, making sure he's healthy and chauffeuring him to numerous WIU and community events each year. Think Purple, Think Summer, Think Western

From general education courses to online courses to classes that count toward a major, Western's 2012 Summer Session has something to suit every student's schedule ... and degree.

According to Kathleen Neumann '86 MS '88, interim associate provost and coordinator of summer school at Western, courses are taught by full-time faculty and the vast majority hold the highest degree in their field. Summer Session '12 courses available include offerings in general education, undergraduate and graduate courses and honors classes, delivered in residential, online or extension/distance learning formats.

Think PurpleNew students who enroll for summer courses and select Western as their university of choice also have the advantage of locking in at the 2011-12 tuition and fee level. WIU's Cost Guarantee locks in the cost of tuition, fees, and room and board during students' four years of enrollment. What a student pays this summer is what he or she will pay for the next four years, with no increases, changes or surprises, Neumann pointed out. Read more.

Foundation's Phonathon Raises Funds

Each year, Western Illinois University Alumni can look forward to a phone call from a WIU student who is calling to update them on their alma mater. The eight-month Western Illinois University fundraising Phonathon not only raises money for the University’s scholarships and academic programs, but also offers an employment opportunity for nearly 50 students who enjoy the opportunity to visit with alumni about their time at Western.

The WIU Phonathon is part of Western’s Annual Fund, the main fundraising effort for University alumni. Other components include direct mail pieces, and online and mobile giving. “The Annual Fund is a year-round effort, of which the Phonathon plays a major role,” said Director of Annual Giving Tim Hallinan ‘95. The Annual Fund raises about $2 million for WIU scholarships and academic programs each year. The Phonathon accounts for between $300,000 and $400,000 of the total, with pledges ranging from $25 to $5,000.

“The Phonathon began in the early 80s with faculty volunteers. With the introduction of the Internet it’s become more technological.” About two years ago the WIU Annual Fund transitioned its database to a computer system, which improved efficiency, Hallinan said. Read more.
