Centennial Honors College
Recognizing Outstanding Academic Achievement
The Centennial Honors College has celebrated the outstanding academic achievements of students this semester at two events in particular.
As it has for the past two years, the College assisted the campus chapter of Phi Eta Sigma, the nation’s oldest academic honorary in recognizing outstanding achievement of students in first-year studies leading to bachelor’s degrees. During Family Weekend on Saturday, October 3rd, 51 students (45 from the College) were inducted into the Western Illinois Chapter. Barry Witten, Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and a long-time Phi Eta Sigma member, presented the keynote address “Meeting Challenges in a Changing World”. During Homecoming weekend on Sunday, October 18th, Bill Knox, Director of the Centennial Honors College, delivered the keynote address, “Doing, Planning, and Balancing” at the second annual chapter induction of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Both of these events were held in the University Union Lamoine Room and were followed by refreshments and informal congratulations and conversation among students, parents, and WIU faculty and staff.
Also during Homecoming weekend, the Student Honors Association (SHA) participated in several events and earned third-place in the "Dec the Campus" competition with its window painting on the west side of the Student Recreation Center. Unfortunately, Rocky’s Regatta, the annual cardboard boat race, was rained out. However, the competition will be held in the spring. The SHA boat will be stored indoors and kept at the ready!
The Centennial Honors College celebrates the curricular and extracurricular efforts of these students!
