Tailgating Procedures Change at WIU

WIU Athletics logoTailgating has become a popular activity at home Leatherneck football games. On May 18, 2009, WIU President Al Goldfarb approved new guidelines and procedures to ensure that fans can enjoy this pregame activity and the excitement of Leatherneck Football.

Leatherneck Men's Soccer Notches First Exhibition Win

Late heroics by Kevin Hinds and Arthur Paszkowski helped the WesternWIU Soccer photo one Illinois Fighting Leathernecks defeat Olivet Nazarene University, 2-1 in overtime last week, evening the team's exhibition record at 1-1.

Paszkowski found Hinds with a crossing pass in the 12th minute of overtime and Hinds knocked a header in to the right corner of the net for the game-winning goal.

Women's Soccer Team Blanks Culver-Stockton

WIU Women's Soccer photoSophomore Nora Potempa scored three goals to fuel the Western Illinois Fighting Leathernecks past Culver-Stockton College, 12-0, in the first exhibition match of the season.

Potempa took a pass from Caitlin Barrett and knocked in a header in the 4th minute to put the Leathernecks up 1-0.

It was all Western from there as Potempa scored two more times in the first half, including a goal off a corner kick in the 24th minute, leading the Leathernecks to a 7-0 halftime lead.

2009 Volleyball Team Debuts and Sets Game Day Promotions

The Western Illinois volleyball team played host to nearly 250 fans recently during the Fighting Leathernecks’ third-annual Purple and Gold Scrimmage at Western Hall.

The event gave fans the chance to put their volleyball skills to the test before getting a sneak preview of what is to come from the Leathernecks in the 2009 season. The Western Illinois volleyball team treated all in attendance to free Papa John’s Pizza while the first 100 fans received a free Purple and Gold T-shirt.

Western will play several home matches this season and host many promotions, including "Volleyopoly", "Greek Night", "Professor Night" and "Girl Scout Night."
