Another Method?: Use 'Clear Thinking When Drinking'

While one Western alumnus is marketing a drink for hangovers, another is promoting an idea that would prevent them in the first place: responsible drinking.

Roman Solohub '79, a captain for Delta Airlines and a father of two college-aged children, has written the book "Clear Thinking When Drinking: The Handbook for Responsible Alcohol Consumption" to promote the idea that learning to drink responsibly is a requirement for anyone who chooses to drink.

Solohub got the idea for the book while sitting through college orientations with his daughter and then his son.

"It became painfully obvious that the university she was going to attend was expending a lot of energy and money warning of the ills of underage drinking," he said. "But even though the consumption of alcohol was being acknowledged, the correct and safe protocol of this consumption was not addressed.

"Everyone knows college students are going to drink, and their parents pray they don't hurt themselves doing it."

Solohub argues that a more effective approach is to acknowledge that drinking will occur-and teach young people how to drink responsibly.

"My goal is to get the message out about responsible alcohol consumption through the book and also through speaking on the subject to corporations, fraternities and sororities," he said.

The book is available at the web site www.thinkingwhendrinking.com.
