Vocalists advance to national level

Western's School of Music will be represented by a current instrumental student and an alumna vocalist at the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) National Competition March 29-April 2 in Denver.

Senior Hillary Brunner (Chadwick, Ill.), an oboe student of Professor Michael Ericson, advances to national competition based on winning the East Central Division MTNA Young Artists woodwind competition held Jan. 18-20 at Olivet Nazarene University (Bourbonnais, Ill.).

Brunner will represent the Midwest in competition against the winners of the other six divisions at the national competition. She is on track to graduate in May with two music degrees: a Bachelor of Music with an option in music performance and a Bachelor of Arts in Music with an option in music business.

Carrie Pollard ‘07 (Round Lake Beach, Ill.), graduated last fall with a Bachelor of Music degree with an option in vocal performance. She was awarded an alternate prize in the Young Artist voice competition, and will advance to nationals because the division winner is unable to attend. Pollard studied voice at Western for two years with Lynn Thompson and for one and one-half years with Kitty Karn.

Diana Miller (Zelienople , Penn.), a first-year graduate student of Professor Bruce Briney's trumpet studio, was awarded an alternate prize in the East Central Division MTNA Young Artists brass competition.
