Giants' Seubert becomes ninth Leatherneck to earn Super Bowl ring

Rich Seubert and his son HunterNew York Giants left guard Rich Seubert became the ninth former Western Illinois University player to earn a Super Bowl ring after the Giants overcame the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII in what is being called one of the best upsets in sports history.

Seubert, who played at Western Illinois from 1997-2000, started for the Giants despite spraining a knee two weeks earlier. He was joined on the field by another former Leatherneck, Patriots strong safety Rodney Harrison (1991-93), who owns two Super Bowl rings himself.

The Feb. 3 game marked the sixth time in the last seven years that the Leathernecks have been represented on the world championship team. Twelve former Leathernecks have been members of 28 Super Bowl appearances throughout history. Additionally, eight of the last nine Super Bowl teams that have included a Leatherneck alumnus, have been victorious. According to the College Sporting News, Western Illinois had more former players (seven) on NFL season-ending rosters than all but one Football Championship Subdivision team.
