The L. “Westy” Westendorf Scholarship Endowment has been established for Western Illinois University kinesiology students in the College of Education and Human Services to honor the memory of the late physical education instructor and head volleyball coach.
The Westendorf Scholarship will be awarded to a junior or senior kinesiology major who demonstrates professional promise.
Westendorf came to the physicial education (now called kinesiology) department as an instructor in 1967 after earning her master's degree from the University of Northern Colorado. While at WIU, Westy taught a variety of classes and coached volleyball, first as an assistant coach and later as head coach.
Carolyn Collins ‘63 MA ‘68, Macomb, Ill., a friend of Westendorf, provided the initial funding necessary to establish the scholarship. According to Collins, Westy was known throughout the department by both faculty and students as a special teacher who motivated and inspired others with her enthusiasm, sense of humor and dedication.
“She never failed to promote Western whenever she had the opportunity,” added Collins.
While she treasured her WIU experience, Westendorf left the University in 1977 for a career with World Savings in California. In 1993, following a promotion to assistant vice president, she relocated to the corporate office in San Antonio, Texas. Returning to her teaching background, she trained hundreds of employees in customer service and management skills. She died unexpectedly at her home in Texas in 2006.
