WIU recently commemorated the 10-year anniversary of the Student Recreation Center (SRC) on campus–a birthday that took place amidst a significant upgrade.
Approved in a 1995 campus-wide referendum and funded by revenue bonds, the 78,000-square-foot center officially opened its doors Oct. 1, 1997. The center was renamed the Donald S. Spencer Student Recreation Center in 2004 to honor Western's ninth president. The SRC houses an aquatics center, racquetball courts, four multipurpose courts, an elevated running track, a cardiovascular activity area, a weight room, an aerobics activity area, locker rooms and meeting rooms.
The center, which serves nearly 1,500 people a day, is currently undergoing a $6.2 million, 21,000-square-foot addition. The renovation will increase the size of the weight room and add more space in a “quarter circle” area south of the existing wall on court number one.
Two arena courts will be added (basketball, volleyball, indoor soccer) and the increased space will allow the track to almost double its present size. In addition, more cardio space will be added on the present south end of the track for a “Cardio Bridge ” and the current weight room will be renovated into a new fitness area.
