Women's Soccer Ends Record-Breaking Season

Western Illinois women's soccer team won its first Summit League championship and finished the 2007 season with a 16-3-1 overall record. The team achieved a perfect 8-0-0 record in Summit League play, setting a conference record for league wins in a single season. First-year head coach (and WIU kinesiology instructor) Tony Guinn also led the squad to the most overall wins in school history.

In addition, the team broke several other school records. Senior Robyn Ruypers (Petrolia, Ontario) broke the University's career record for goals (20) and points (53) in a career. The team also set a record for shutouts in a season (9). Their win-loss percentage ranked among the top five in the country, and they ranked among the nation's top 25 teams in goals-against average and save percentage.

Guinn, who joined the program in Summer 2007, coming to Western from Saint Mary's University of Minnesota, was named Summit League Coach of the Year, and seven players earned all-conference honors.

All-Summit League First Team honorees are: junior midfielder Ashley Hoch (Brookfield, Wis.), senior midfielder Misako Inaba (Japan), junior forward Katelyn Wisner (Lenexa, Kan.), and junior defender Kim Schuneman (Elm Grove, Wis.). All-Summit League Second Team honorees are: senior forward Robyn Ruypers, junior defender Elaine “Lainey” Bruhn (Leawood, Kan.), and sophomore goalkeeper Meghan Tyk (Whitefish Bay, Wis.).
