2nd assignment : Book Cover redesign
Artwork - For this assignment, I would like you to design two variations of a book cover. This cover will be used for a printed trade-sized paperback and for an ebook. Select an existing hard-bound book, paperback or textbook and redesign the front
cover. What is the essential message or key aspect
of this book? Communicate this message through the new cover's design, image
and font selection. I recommend selecting a single, effective image.
- Redesign the cover of an existing book
- The new cover will need the title, author's name (and other information
that appears on the cover - publisher's name, etc.) and a dominant image.
Change the cover's image, fonts, colors, proportions, balance, emphasis, etc.
- The book will now be a trade-sized paperback (5-1/4 x 8-1/4" x 300 dpi) as well as an ebook (768 x 1025 pixels).
While working on these assignments, save your images in the PSD (Photoshop
document) format. This is the native Photoshop file format. It supports layers
and other Photoshop information (only when you are finished should you convert
the file to another format. Otherwise, you will not be about to edit text
or work on separate layers. Also, when you save the file as a JPEG or GIF
file, visual information is permanently lost due to file compression).
Written portion - For the written portion of this assignment, you will
need to write:
- In one sentence, define the key element of this book that you need to visually
communication
- Define the book's target audience (who is this book written for?)
- What font(s) did you select. Discuss your selection(s)
- What is the emphasis of this cover. Discuss how and why you made this the
emphasis
- Discuss the differences in design between the two versions (the ebook is wider).
Begin this assignment by thumbnail sketches. A thumbnail is a small, quick sketch
for trying out ideas. Select the best idea and create a full-sized rough (5.25
x 8.25"). Position the headline, sketch in the illustration or photo, and
simulated the body copy with lines. The rough and written portion will be turned
in when the assignment is due.
