5th assignment : Newspaper public service ad

Create a public service advertisement for your local newspaper. This ad will be printed without color. It will be 4" wide and 3" in height.

Redesign the following ad or another Ad Council public service message. This ad has far too much information for its size! I have provided the ad's text below so you can simply copy and paste it. Edit this text down to its essential information and create a different image. Though you can rewrite the headline and copy, you must use the organization's logo. It is not necessary to also use the Ad Council logo.

This ad should have:

  1. A dominant image -the image must attract your attention. If this image or the headline doesn't catch your eye, the ad's information won't be read
  2. A headline -fewer than ten words
  3. Copy -an absolute minimal number of words
  4. Contact information -telephone number, address or email
  5. The organization's logo -commonly placed in the lower right hand corner so it is the last item seen (our culture has been taught to read from left to right and from top to bottom).
I have provided a large copy of the logo below. Its size will need to be reduced. It will also need to be converted to grayscale.

Dimensions: 4" x 3"
(newspapers use 'columns' as a unit of measure for width. To set column width: File > Preferences > Units and Rules > Column Size: Width 1.875", Gutter .25")

Resolution: 150 pixels/inch

Mode: Grayscale

Save as: TIFF file format, so this image can be used by a layout program such as QuarkXPress or InDesign.

Written portion - For the written portion of this assignment, you will need to write:

  1. In one sentence, define the key message of this ad that you need communication
  2. Define the ad's target audience (who is this ad direct to?)
  3. What font(s) did you select. Discuss your selection(s)
  4. What is the first thing that you want the reader to see in this ad? Discuss how and why you made this the emphasis.
