4th assignment: Two-page spread on a 20thC style or contemporary digital artist
InDesign and Photoshop

1) Choose either a 20th-Century style of art (such as Dadaism, Russian Constructivism, Art Deco) or a contemporary digital artist to research. Contemporary artists can be found using sites such as www.sfmoma.org/, www.thedigitalartist.com/digitals.shtml and dam.org/.

2) Write or edit an existing article. At a minimum, this article will need to be 600 words in length. Develop the article's headline and single out one or two significant statements from this article to use as emphasized text. If possible, contact this artist by email.

3) Design this spread to reflect this artist's style - using fonts that also convey the artist's style.

4) Using InDesign, use at least one placed image, have a headline, subtitle and -if possible- credit the writer and artist/photographer for each image. I would recommend that you use drop caps, and one or two emphasized statements.

5) You will need design these pages in an existing magazine's layout and style -ie. make the spread so it appears to be placed in Time, Rolling Stone, etc.

Written portion - For the written portion of this assignment, you will need to write:

  1. In one sentence, define the key idea or visual identity of this style or artist.
  2. Define this article's target audience (who is this article written for?)
  3. What font(s) did you select. Discuss your selection(s)
  4. What is the emphasis of this spread. Discuss how and why you made this the emphasis
  5. Discuss how the spread's fold affected the placement of images and overall composition
