Mary Giehl, All About Water

All About Water,
installation, 2005

This exhibit features installation art by New York artist Mary Giehl. This site-specific work is about our water, how contaminated it is in different areas of the world. This contaminated water is responsible for 4,000 deaths of children per day. 2 buckets of uncontaminated water per child would save their lives. Mary Giehl teaches sculpture and fibers at Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York.

Mary Giehl is widely known for her work about children and abuse. She worked as a Registered Nurse for 20 years in the Pediatric Care Unit in Syracuse, New York. Having cared for abused children her work has focused around this theme. There are hints of darkness and confinement in her installations along with a mixture and balance of playfulness and seriousness.

This exhibition is held in conjunction with and in support of Western Illinois University's "American Democracy Project" and the 2005-2006 University Theme: Global Challenges and Personal Responsibility.

The Gallery Talk program is co-sponsored by the University Art Gallery, the Visiting
Lectures Committee and the Council on Student Activities Funds.
