"The WPA and Civilian Conservation Corps in the Quad Cities"
Gallery Talk: Jeff Hancks

Margrette Oatway, “Cradling Wheat”

Jeff Hancks, Professor of Regional Studies and University Archivist at Western Illinois University's Malpass Library, and Rock Island native, will speak about the WPA's extensive and varied activities in the Quad City area. Special attention will be paid to the construction of Rock Island's Black Hawk State Park by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Attendees should gain a new understanding of and appreciation for the WPA (Works Progress Administration) and its role in the development of the region.

"The Federal Art Project and the American Scene"

Gallery Walk: George Mavigliano.

Western Illinois University alumnus (1964) and professor emeritus at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, George Mavigliano is the author of "The Federal Art Project in Illinois," Carbondale: Southern Illinois University Press, 1990. He will offer insights regarding subject matter demands and the creativity of the artist during this extraordinary period of American Art under Governmental patronage.

"Relief and Recovery Without Strings: The New Deal in McDonough County, Illinois"
Slide lecture by David M. Atkinson.

David Atkinson is the author of "Relief and Recovery Without Strings: The New Deal in McDonough County, Illinois, 1933-1940," a Master of Arts Degree Thesis (1999) in the Department of History in the Graduate School of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Mr. Atkinson will discuss various New Deal programs and projects that assisted and benefited the citizens and towns of McDonough County, Illinois. Projects range from architectural projects, such as shelter houses at Glenwood Park and Spring Lake State Park, the Girl Scout Camp at Spring Lake to tree plantings at Argyle Lake State Park to road construction projects throughout the county. By special arrangement with the McDonough County Historical Society.


Tuesday, November 15, 7 p.m. In the Gallery.
"The New Deal at Western Illinois State Teachers College"
Slide lecture: David M. Atkinson.

Mr. Atkinson will present an overview of the various programs and projects that benefited the students and the University during the Great Depression. Some of the projects include the construction of the Laboratory School, (presently Simpkins Hall,) art and theatre, and student assistance.

An exhibition of artworks from the New Deal era from the Western Illinois University Art Gallery Permanent Collection. This was the first major era of government patronage for art in the United States.

The exhibit includes works by Gertrude Abercrombie, Macena Barton, Charles Biesel, Fred Biesel, Aaron Bohrod, Howard Langdon Brown, Elizabeth Colwell, Vincent D'Agostino, Emil Jacques Grumieaux, Kalman Edward Himmel, J. Theodore Johnson, Anne Michalov, Archibald J. Motley, Jr., Hester Miller Murray, Helen Noel, Margrette Oatway, Pablo O'Higgins, Gregory Orloff, Anton Rogalski, Romolo Roberti, Cornelius C. Sampson, John F. Stenvall, Paul Stoddard, Charles M. Turzak, Robert White, and Ellsworth Young.
