Regina Coeli Monastery
(currently The Abbey Hotel)
1401 Central Avenue

Bettendorf, Iowa 52722

The Abbey Hotel is situated atop a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. This beautiful Romanesque building was constructed in 1914-17, as a monastery for the Sisters of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The monastery was named "Regina Coeli", Latin for "Queen of Heaven".

The Carmelite Sisters came to Davenport in 1911 from Baltimore. They settled at 15th and Brady Streets and began construction of a monastery on that site in 1912. When they decided to move to Bettendorf in 1914, they dismantled the chapel brick by brick and rebuilt it. Thus the chapel on which this angelic statue stands has both dates, 1912 and 1917, on its cornerstone.

Architect Arthur Ebling, a Rock Island native, also designed the Scott County Court House, J. W. Bettendorf residence, Kahl Building and buildings on the St. Ambrose campus.
