The Saint Ambrose statue was shipped to the SAU campus on Oct. 22, 1975 from St. Agnes Church of Cleveland. It was purchased for $150.

On Nov. 16, 1985, the statue was knocked over. Although the head was broken into pieces, the rest of the body remained intact. At first, it
was thought that the statue was unrepairable, but with the help of James Anderson, the statue was restored and rededicated in October of 1986.

It is believed that the statue was sculpted around 1925. The university found out about the statue from John Carpenter, who lived in Cleveland and saw the statue in St. Agnes Church, which was about to be demolished. Carpenter, who knew there was a St. Ambrose University somewhere in the midwest, called William Bakrow, the president of St. Ambrose, and told him about the statue.
